"I take full responsibility"

This phrase has become just as annoying as saying "these unique and challenging times" when COVID first popped up.

Every CEO is saying it when laying off massive amounts of employees, but does it really help?

I have yet to see a CEO say anything about what they did to try and prevent this, why it didnt work and what they plan to do.

It starts to seem annoying and disingenuous. Has anyone seen any CEO do anything better than this???

When CEO's are willing to take a pay hit down to receiving Zero pay, than I will believe they are taking full responsibility.

I have.

Not down to zero, but an uncomfortable amount that effected lifestyle

The big dawgs in the press aren’t doing that.

The worst is when they say they "take full responsibility" then follow up by blaming everything on the economy, the Fed, the president, the war in Ukraine, etc., etc.

No...but I'd have to assume there are some that have but it's not making headlines.

Didn't Bravado have some layoffs recently? I think Sahil made a post about it and the reasoning behind it.

Could totally be wrong so don't hold my feet to the fire on this.

It comes across as a platitude because it's not going to fix the problem of real people losing real jobs.

Conveying sympathy to a group of people while sending a message to the marketplace in the midst of bad news is always going to be insufficient and fall short.

I'm honestly not sure what else could be said that would be sufficient and wouldn't spook investors, but that's also why I'm glad I'm not a CEO and making decisions that impact the livelihood of thousands.

"I take full responsibility" is one of the emptiest statements made. There's no accountability to that statement and it is entirely a putrid attempt at PR. They take full responsibility for collecting their paycheck...

LI feed says that Tim Cook just took a 40% pay cut instead of layoffs?

Not sure of the small print on that, but if Apple goes through the year without cutting staff I would consider a head nod for that.

Nope, it's like a word with no content behind, it's mainly being used to take off the sense of guilt towards the employees and even himself.

But still nothing will hold him back as he didn't actually mean it.

I stand by this assessment:

The majority of the layoffs were caused by mid to lower level people in these companies who hired to inflate their egos and positions.

The failure in the C-suite of big tech was trusting their employees to make scale decisions. Simply put, mid level and lower level managers solve problems by throwing bodies at them, and true executives built these businesses on shoe string budgets.

FWIW: We had to do layoffs at Bravado, we cut all exec salaries / pay, and I personally tried to sell us out of the downturn for 6 months by playing half-CEO and half-AE and couldn't do it.

I'm not saying every CEO or company did everything they could. But I am saying that we truly tried to avoid doing layoffs, but holy shit this economy turned fast and deep. :/
