Is a luxury gym worth it?

Fellow soldiers - I am starting a new gig soon that will be fully remote and have been considering up leveling my gym membership to a more luxury style club (Equinox) to gain access to their amenities (office rooms, saunas, ect).

I have a pretty cheap gym membership now but think the larger investment would also help get me out of the house more.

Wanted to get some opinions here if the luxury gyms are really worth the price tag??

It will either get you out of the house more or it will be a larger bill per month for something you rarely use.

True, plus if you’re not doing anytging more than running on a treadmill and stretching its a wasted expense. But, if you take classs, swim, sauna, pool, etc its so worth it.

Equinox is *okay*

I go to a specialty gym with hands on semi private personal training. So you basically get new programs every month and someone keeping an eye on your for proper form/questions/support/etc. I really love it because there’s a sense of community and accountability.

If I was doing my workouts solo, I don’t think I’d care about where it was. Unless a cheap place didn’t have the equipment I wanted and/or it was too crowded with assholes or something.

I do something similar, and I agree. It's nice to go in and not have to think or wonder what you should do today. It's in the program and its lead by a coach. Foam roll, stretch, dynamic warm up, plyometrics, strength training, then conditioning. I would never do that stuff on my own. So yeah, I'll pay the extra money for my health.

Not worth it unless you're using it to network. The world is your gym in my opinion. Hell, I use my shower as my gym.

Equinox is a way to work out around no poor people. If that’s what you’re going for, go for it

What I need in a gym: chalk, barbells, people who STFU and know not to walk in front of me when lifting, and some hype squad folks to get me ready to go for a new PR.

When I sell I build trust with my customers by letting them trial the software and executing on their test criteria flawlessly. Try and get Equinox to give you an extended free trial ha.

It depends on what motivates you/ what kind of gym time you enjoy.

I love taking regular gym classes. I would pay good money to those gyms that have classes I like and are not during my work hours.

I wouldn't pay more for a gym that just teaches one kind of class, has huge classes where they can't pay attention to you, or has tons of features I won't use like tanning or an Olympic sized swimming pool.

All depends upon if you will be using it regularly. If you are going to use it consistently and want the added amenities then go for it. If you can’t consistently use the membership then stay the less expensive route.

Have an Equinox membership starting next Monday to try and figure out the same things myself lol.

Also a quick pro-tip for anyone considering joining Equinox - it's Q4 for them too and you can negotiate, I got my monthly rate down, annual fee waived, a whole bunch of extra guest passes and some other stuff. They'll also lock you into a 1 year contract but the way out if you want to cancel it is to buy something super cheap on amazon and have it shipped to someone you know who lives in another state and have them take a picture of the delivered package with your name on it and you get get out of your agreement early.

I worked at equinox for 4 years. The primary benefit is the networking aspect of it.

Serious question but how do you network at the gym without being an asshole? I hate when people I don’t know talk to me at the gym and most women I’m close to hate it 10x as much.

Kinda wondering this too. I'm sure if you go regular, you see the same people after a while. Becomes natural to be like "hey, sup"

I used to be a Lifetime member. Similar to Equinox. Then I downgraded to 24. Definitely like the facilities and availability of equipment of the more luxury gyms.

But, by far, the best decision I've made during this pandemic was to invest in my own gym equipment at home.

If you have the space, I highly recommend it.

It's only going to be worth it if your company will pay for it. I wouldn't recommend it

Clearly, you have already made the emotional decision that you want to make this purchase, and now you are just going through the process of finding technical justifications for the purchase... in a second you are going to build a ROI in excel to calculate that this is financially a good decision. Dude just go ahead and make the purchase, as you clearly want to.

Will the company pay for it?

not fully, but they reimburse up to $100 I believe. My current company has a similar plan and right now I submit my low gym fee and use the rest on workout clothing, home equipment, ect. Trying to weigh the pros/cons of each approach

How much do you use your current gym membership?  Do you think that after the hype of the cool facilities it will actually be worth it?

I use it 5 days a week at the moment, and am leaning towards not going the luxury route after some of the savage input here.

I am today years old that I found out Luxury Gyms existed. What would something like this cost? I'm looking into a gym membership that is 280.00 per month and I thought that was pretty expensive. I really need to know what a luxury gym would cost. lol

That’s about right. Equinox Destination costs $315/mo for access to every location in the country.

Interesting. That's not too much more than the one I was looking at and you could only attend 3 classes per week. If you wanted more it was 320 per month.

Good thing about equinox is unlimited access to the classes, so if you go 3-4x a week at the very least it’s worth it… kind of.

It depends on how often you are going to go to it and use the different amenities. For me it is 100% worth paying as I use it 5-6 times a week.

I was paying 120$ a month and started going just for badass amenities and skipping my workouts. I am much happier now with a cheap 40$/month.
