Job Hopping

Hey fam,

I've been at my company for 1 month, I'm really liking it so far. Great comp, good manager, culture, and can be fully remote.

BUT, a company reached out to me for an AE role, had a great first interview, and got 2-3 more to go.

The only reason I took this interview is because it is for AE.

My question is: When I get asked about job hopping, how would you handle the question?

I was at my previous role for 6 months and bounced, and now I am interviewing for this role one month into my new job.

I left the first company because of my boss and already explained why I'm considering a career change even though I barely started at my new company.

Well, you haven’t been offered the AE role just yet, but seriously, it’s not worth worrying about if you get an offer, and it’s good, and you do jump. After only a month at your current employer, you could even drop it after you’ve been in the new role for a while. However, I wouldn’t let them know you are interviewing until you’ve gotten an offer and have decided to take the job, and have to give notice.

Totally, I know i don't have the role yet, and if I do get it then my concerns are gone as you mentioned.

My questions is, in my next interview, they might ask me about why I'm looking to switch even though I am only a month in. So, I wanted to get some ideas about how to handle the question.

Ill tell the truth though, that I'm not really looking but this opportunity sounds amazing and that's why I took the call. Since they are the ones that reached out to me.

Do I value loyalty? Yes. But if someone else values that loyalty more? Yes. At the end of the day I am working for money. And I want to be where I am valued most. I go where most valued. I wasn’t looking for a new job. You came to me. Thats why I’m open to seeing if there is someone who values me more.

Also, At will employment also means, At will walking away. If they can leave you jobless at a moments notice without cause, you can leave them as well.

Wait until you get it.

However make sure you are ready. I made the mistake of wanting the run before I could walk

Yeah, of course. I was just curious on how to answer the question in the best way possible during the interview.

I was interviewing for SDR roles too when an AE recruiter reached out to me. Now I’m an AE. Do whats best for your career. That company would lay you off too if they knew they could get more profit with someone else

I'm def taking the AE role if I get it, the question was more about how to deal with the question, which I'm very likely to get asked.

You definitely have to take care of yourself. A month is short enough it can be omitted or spun as misrepresented opportunity no cultural fit.

But also you don't have it yet, so don't worry :)

Agreed, thank you chief. The question is more focused on how to handle the question.

I tried to address that but missed a word or two.

I was saying that you can answer the question but stating that the opportunity was misrepresented (we've ALL been there) or it simply wasn't a fit (culturally or otherwise).

I think some of the other commenters interpreted this as you asking about for future interviews. I read it as if you get asked in this interview. If I read it the way you meant -

I would be honest with them. You're happy with where you're at, but if the opportunity they present offers a bump in title and pay then you would be crazy not to at least hear them out.

In the end you're working for money and to pay your bills. Not to be loyal to a company. If something is able to advance your career and earn you more $$$ then it is worth the conversation.

Always do what's best for you.  The company will show you no loyalty at the end of the day so there's no reason for you to be loyal to them.

Ok, there are a few things to consider. Just because it’s an AE role, doesn’t make it a great move.

Why do you like your current job is an important factor. Do you have anyone in your network at the job pursuing you? Do you know anything about the company?

You will always be flooded with interviews. Had 100 interviews in a year and had a job that was paying well, but the acquisition messed with the culture. I was extremely selective, not from loyalty but because I want to make sure what they’re selling isn’t horse shit.

They don’t know you they don’t know anyone you know. Keep that in mind. If your vibe is solid where you are, take that into consideration.

Sincerely,

An old ass savage
