Job market Competition

Haven't been in the market for nearly 5 years. My goodness how things have changed.

Roles fill fast, everyone's process sucks, and competition is HOT.

Hottest competition i've ever experienced. Feels like so many people have been laid off the past year, and now businesses are hiring them all back. Which means lots of talented people getting in demand jobs.

It sucks. Hard to differentiate yourself these days.

I've used pictures of myself smiling holding clever signs.

I've used Loom.

I've cold called, linkedin DM'd, emailed. Got myself an Apollo account.

But it's TOUGH.

Fill this thread up with your recent story of how you got hired!

โ€œDear hiring dude,
Your JD is asking for expertise and experience with X and Y. I would gladly yield to anyone who has both. But I have years of experience in X. Iโ€™ve accomplished Z. If you find your search to be futile, call me.โ€

Post that redacted resume and get some help.
Also maybe where you're getting stuck in the process - are you getting interviews (or not)?
Are you getting past the HR screen (or not)?
Getting to the final interview?

We'd love to help a savage out!

It's ok, I'm nearsighted.
I recommended losing the Business Development wording in your title.

Question is, what roles are you looking for? Director of Sales/leadership, or IC/AE?

I have a separate one for IC roles. but primarily looking for manager/director level leadership roles.

I can't read much and don't like clicking attachments, but 2 things:
1. Great that you're crowdsourcing help.
2. Change your tagline/heading - seems very junior given the roles you've had. It doesn't read like you've actually been in the leadership roles you have.

GOOD LUCK!

Agree, I'd remove the "business development" in the header.

When I started out that basically just meant sales. Now it absolutely has a different, and much more Junior, connotation

I'm a firm believer in keeping it simple. Something as concise as 'Accomplished Sales Leader'.
If you're targeting a vertical (or delivery method like SaaS) that most of your experience is in, you can always add that. 'Proven' could also work, up to you.

(I'm also a firm believer in upvoting replies that help/are appreciated)

Curious what stage in the interview are you getting rejected? That might give you a good idea of where improvements are needed.

I'm doing a lot of disqualifying. I'm getting hits on roles i'm not strongly pursuing, but not getting hits on the roles i think i'd be a best fit for. granted, changing industries is challenging. for some reason that's a big deal to people

I'm in the same spot as you. Seeing a lot of companies reach out that aren't good fits or are dumpster fires. Will be better when the good one's start planning for next year.

The success Iโ€™ve had is through my network and connections at company X. Even if itโ€™s a second or third connection, shoot over a message on LI asking if theyโ€™d be open to have a 15 minute conversationโ€ฆ basic stuff about insights into the company, role, hiring process, tips and tricks, etc.

I would change it from sales development to sales leader looking for Enterprise AE opportunities. Our org cut several manager roles because they were taking the high pay and not helping the reps... So get yourself back in the door, perform and no doubt you will get the position back :) Your CV is very impressive but since it's been a few months I would personally consider going for BDR/SDR position if I needed to.

Network, network, network. Tap into your network and see who can grease a door for you. And I'm not talking about a cold-ass LinkedIn/ Text Message/Email. Call people and let them know you're looking for an opportunity.

Get rid of the fluff at the top. Its valuable space and I don't even have to read the statement to know its complete fluff. Instead, at the top use a one line personal branding statement. The job you are seeking and a dask followed by your employer value add... something you are an expert at that makes you unique and is valuable to your potential employer.
An example is:
Key Account Sales Executive - Expert in Expansion of XXXX in Largest Accounts

(Ok, that sucked but you get the idea.)

Then straight into your RELEVANT works experience. Not what you did, but your accomplishments that the potential new employer would care about. Use % and $ amounts to show what you brought to your previous employers.

I could go on, but this shoudl keep you busy. REMEMBER: You have 5 seconds to make an impression. Don't attempt to do it in some paragraph fluff statement.

You aren't competing with just unemployed job seekers. You are competiting with the other 70% of the workforce that is employed and also looking to change jobs this year. The government statistics are garbage....
