Just started, but got a better offer. What to do?

I recently started as an AE at a reputable tech company. I've been here for a few months and it's been good. But I recently got an offer from a tech company that is 30% more base (40% more OTE).
The company I work for is great, but the other company is also awesome. I'm leaning towards taking the new offer but feel guilty. any advice?

Know that if you leave, the bridge will be burned with your current employer for good. If you're comfortable with that, do you.

Just be sure you're not only thinking of the OTE. You know I fuckin love $$$ but it's not the only thing that matters.

Ask yourself if the company you're entertaining have as good or better:

- product/value prop
- culture/leadership
- benefits/perks

No marketing, mayo isn't an MQL
So long as you don't care about working at that company in the future, if you drop it off your resume then no one will care.

Worth pondering up all the other points that @funcoupons touched upon

What is the culture like?

The culture is very good at both. The new company is about 4x smaller but seems like they have a great team. Not as good 401k or health benefits (but not far off) much better stock options

Don’t feel guilty for looking out for yourself. Your company is not your family no matter how many times they leverage that to drive retention.
With that being said, lay out your motivators, priorities, and goals. Try and compare the organizations tit for tat instead of just great or awesome. If comp and OTE is top of the list by a long shot you probably have your answer. Compare growth opportunities, stability, culture, and most importantly, at least in my eyes, is your management. I’d also be aware why the role is open. Are they scaling fast, is it a backfill, etc.
At the end of the day I typically go with my gut/first instinct as it hasn’t lead me to far off the track I want to be on

You gotta do what's right for you. Just be wary if in the same industry or if you operate in close circles.

It’s seems like you love everything about the new company. If you heart tells you to move, go ahead.

I might feel a little guilt but you have to look out for your star player(you). 40% more OTE does what for your quality of life? Drive a nicer car? Start a family? buy a house? Retire sooner?

damn 30% is a big difference if you ask me.

i would make sure the commission structure and ability to hit quota are not terrible.

Also make sure benefits line up for you.

I never blame people for jumping ship for more money.

how come this offer came in late?

if you jump id tell you current company:

"I really hate to do this, but X company is a dream job for me, I did not think i was going to get it, turns out I did. I understand this is fairly unprofessional, but Id really kick my self if I didnt take this offer"

idk something like that to soften the blow

Yea I was not planning on leaving any time soon but this company and the offer they gave is hard to pass up.
Thanks so much for the advice. I’m going to use that when I put my two weeks in next week.

no problem! I always consider my self to be a "team" guy so making a decision that goes against that "team" can be hard.

Just know, doing what you think is right for your self, is never the wrong move.

good luck!

30% is significant, but as others have said, its not everything.
Are there other benefits of significance? Insurance can be a big deal from company to company. That 30% bump may be lost if the insurance sucks and you are out of pocket paying for some major catastrophe.
Which company has the most resume power? It might be worth to stick it out at the current company if there the resume power a couple years from now if far greater.

Thanks fire the advice. I think They both have pretty good resume power. I think the company I’m at now might have a little more but not much.

Do your due diligence. Higher OTE means nothing if no one hits or the accelerators are terrible.

Super risky at only a few months in. What is 30% more base and 40% ote exactly? If we’re talking $20-30k I’d probably not do it. Now $50k+ is another story. I would also have to see myself at the new job at 3-6+ years.

Yea it’s risky but I do see my self there for a while and the total pay increase is about $100k more then what I’m making know.. which is crazy and why I couldn’t say no.

You can put a dollar amount on peace of mind. You can compensate for it somewhat when you don't have any major commitments (marriage, children, etc.) Take some time to research that company and find out if it's a great fit for you. Another thing to consider is the growth path. What are your next steps if you succeed?
