Making the switch from hybrid hunting/farming to strictly hunting

Hello savages,

I've been in a hybrid sales role for about 8 years for different tech companies and have had some decent success. I've always enjoyed the rush net new logos bring to the table and have considered going to a role that focuses strictly on that.

Have any of you made this shift? I feel like a majority of my peers that have done pure hunting have moved more into a hybrid role/account management over time, potentially for stress or job security purposes? While I've reached out to a few of them for their reasoning, has anyone here gone into pure hunting in the middle of their career? If so, how could I best prepare myself for this change?

Thanks

Sales is sales.
I was in a hybrid role that just shifted to a purely new logo role. Not much has changed, outside of that I don't participate in AM activities anymore. That frees me up to work on all the other activities related to working on new logos.

I think the goals of many hunters is to evolve into the hybrid hunter/farmer role by landing the new account and then expanding, or selling more, into that account.

Right - similar to what I had been doing. However, the company put a team in place to work on those accounts. I did appreciate being able to grow a business, but I won't miss the meetings we had around those plans and having to coordinate with the AM. It took time away from other activities I could be doing.

Exactly. If you are working a new territory, you may put in a lot of work initially, but the goal is to maximize that territory and turn new accounts into dedicated customers. Just because you’re gathering easy sales now, doesn’t mean you didn’t hunt hard for them initially.

Get organized, figure out what your ICP is, and scrape for some lists. There are a TON of great resources for this in the search/Sales GPT bar.

With hybrid you are already doing it. I assume it will be an easy transition for you

Frankly, my skillset lends itself best to hunting/closing. I am impatient and work a fast pace.
Though I enjoy building relationships, I like focus on fresh, new challenges that deals represent. I struggled to adapt in my first quarter as an AM, barely hitting my quota.
In this current role, I am a classic AE that holds accounts for a certain period of time then hands them off to the AM time. I much prefer this.
You need to ask yourself two things, in these order of importance:1. What are you best at? Hunting or farming?2. What do you most enjoy?

Mine is a hybrid, its got its pros and cons but if I could chose, I would go to strictly net new logos instead of upselling and farming. But it is slightly easier!

Companies really want folks who can do it all today - the golden age is on pause and those relied on a pre-built or bd-sourced funnel will drown until the markets turn back.
