Parental leave

hey, so what is your experience with taking some time to support your wife and new born to come?

I'm hoping to get 3 weeks of parental leave with the possibility of more time if needed.

what are some of the things you did to set up a successful leave?

weekly check-ins on DMs and chats from colleagues and prospects/clients?

request for support from others to help with short term needs that id normally handle?

keep in mind I'm the 1 and only BD on the team.

Unplug and take care of your family. Your workplace will survive, I promise. This is not a time where there will be do-overs. Set things up as best you can before you leave, and congratulations!

CLose out what you can and then enjoy the time with the wife and baby. Give them your undivided attention and say no to doing any type of work.

You only get 3 weeks. You will never get that time back with your child. So be with your newborn and enjoy the time! Work will wait. Absolutely no to weekly check ins!!

@sahil Could probably shed some light on this topic.

Prep beforehand so everyone knows what to cover. Then don’t answer company emails. If you are needed, tell them to call. Even then, you should limit availability.

I would totally disconnect and just spend the time with family.

If you take time off do it properly. I just came back from leave.
at the beginning i was checking emails etc.. replying to stuff... nah. disconnect properly.

prepare solid handovers and be clear in what people need to do. Nobody will drive your business like you do.

My largest deals are all dead since i've come back, in fact. I may have as well stayed away longer.

BTW the first 6 weeks with a newborn are the most challenging so your partner and baby will need your support!
congratulations

Literally be present and available for your kiddo and spouse. Nothing else matters.

When everyone’s sleeping, feel free to catch up on anything you feel necessary (chores, work, etc).

Absolutely do not miss out on what’s to come. It’s the best. Congrats!

Been through it multiple times. No bad advice from anyone here, so take the time off and disconnect.

My company allows for 6 weeks of parental leave but I split it up to take 2 weeks off every quarter. For those 2 weeks I am almost entirely unplugged because I will never get that time with my kids back. Tak full advantage of the leave you get

Congrats on the newborn! I'd highly recommend fully unplugging if you can. The coverage will be there...

Take the time off and forget about work. Bonding with your family is important and you'll never get the opportunity again (with this child of course). The team and company will survive without you. Congrats BTW

My mom always said that people think they are crucial for the job. When they are not there the issue just resolves itself. I was always linked with the quote: "the graveyard is full of indispensable people"

Ensure all your deals in the fire have coverage while taking time off. Also, don't think about work. Trust me... you want to enjoy these moments and newborn sleep calibrating is ROUGH. Congrats and good luck!
