Pulling The Trigger

HEY EY EY EY Savages, quick update on pulling the trigger for starting a sales development firm, I'm already working with one client and it's going great.

So I thought I'd ask the class for some advice and ask, what are some of the things I should pay attention to, inexpensive tech or anything else you think will be important?

Make sure youโ€™re getting paid on results - not by the hour. So like a retainer/ or lump sum for a certain period of time.

Always check in on client satisfaction. Very easy to get a 2nd client and move on mentally. Those first impressions are important but your lasting impression determines if they resign.

I have a great 1st client, who is going to introduce me to some of his colleagues that could use my type of help.

I would say as well network internally. Talk to people. Involve them in your deals. Make sure they know who you are and when wins come your way... they will be there to cheer you on.

I'd try to find a way to track results after you turn over a referral. I don't know if that can be done easily or cheaply but definitely worth it to demonstrate your value to future clients.

This is awesome! But โ€œSome things?โ€, you need to pay attention to a lot now, client satisfaction, payment plans, inexpensive tech, referrals, networking, improving offerings and what not.

Even though, this road has some bumps it definitely will be worth walking.

Before anything: congrats and glad it is off to a great start! Glad that you've escaped that awful sales environment that clearly had little support for sales.

Now, I've worked at a sales development firm so have insight into some specifics.

First, results-oriented as others have said. Clients won't be happy if results aren't there, just like any revenue org. My firm used a cost-plus model with accelerators once a monthly quota was hit. Base to ensure a solid cash flow and of course commission (50/50 split between firm and rep)

Second, continuous client communication. Allows for more rapid course correction should things not be going well and for you to address concerns head-on. Also easier to hear about new projects or...

Third, referrals: Best way to grow the business at an early stage is via word of mouth. Your clients talk to people too, use that to talk about new business. Eventually reps will move on and they will be at other sales orgs, where they can talk about your firm.

Fourth, training: I imagine the reps you're bringing on might not be seasoned sellers, which was the case where I worked. Training to ensure your reps' development is crucial and helps to serve all other points.

TL;DR: You're selling yourself now instead of a product, treat it as such (confident you'll do well)

Thank you for the kind words and encouragement. I worked for a sdr go that was nothing but appt setting that never lead to any real opportunities or wins so as you mentioned I will be all about results. With all the different verticals and products Iโ€™ve worked and having a brilliant marketing fella helping along the way as well as my fellow savages, Iโ€™m confident Iโ€™ll be able to add value for any partner that decides to take a chance with me.
