Boss making a big deal over LinkedIn?!!

I have been working at this one company for a couple months now. I haven't updated my LinkedIn for a certain reason.

My manager just keeps messaging me about why my linkedin isn't updated and paying attention to how many connection request ive sent out, but almost every week he is hounding me about updating my linked in and I haven't for certain reasons YET. Now I understand the importance of having LinkedIn as an SDR when it comes to prospecting but it's literally not the holy grail at all, and not going to make or break the work I do.

My take on this situation though is LinkedIn is 100% Property to the individual and it's no different from any other social media FB, Twitter, Instagram. When I'm ready to update I will do that.

Anyways, I wanted to see what your your thoughts on this situation and updating LinkedIn ?

I can see it both ways.

It's not that big a deal, but it also seems odd after several months. Have you told your boss why you haven't changed it yet?

No I didn’t because the reason I haven’t updated it was because I wasn’t sure if this was a place I wanted to be at for a while, and it’s not.

Seems legit. It's your personal page. Do what you want.

You can always remove it if you decide to leave, so while it is your page, I don’t understand why you’re holding fast to not updating it.

I definitely get that, but after a few months you should have a sense or not in my opinion if you want to be there.

you can still update it and then delete that experience later, if you only end up staying a few months.

Your manager probably can tell there is something strange going on

so you are correct. 100% your property and the company cant tell you what to do with it.

on the other hand if i was your boss i would 100% be concerned that you havnt updated your page. especially if you are doing out reach for that company.

in a comment you mentioned you dont know if you are going to stay there long term. so are you not going to include this place on your resume? why leave it off linked in?

Right - if you don't want to stay, fine, but will you be including this company on your experience? If so, absolutely no harm in updating the page; it's somewhere you'll be referencing anyway.

And I totally know how you feel about my personal page. LI is social media and it belongs to you. I refuse to do anything with my profile/outreach that will negatively affect my own personal "brand" (sorry, I don't really like that term, but I haven't had enough coffee and my brain is failing to find an alternative). My current company did request that I use specific language regarding where I'm working now and provided a template for me to update my page, but it wasn't anything alarming, just the online version of our value prop.

After a few months that is odd. If you want them to stop, make up a legit excuse. But it's odd and I've been in your shoes. They haven't simply asked why you don't change it?

Few months definitely seems odd. It is your personal page BUT it's indicative of a few things to your management.

Does your company pay for Sales Navigator, then I can for sure understand why your company wants an updated LinkedIn

Now I'm curious as to why you haven't updated it. Its one thing to wait a week or two, but a couple months...? Probably a good time to update it.

LI is a good prospecting tool. I hate getting requests from people who are just trying to sell me something. And I reject any request which doesn't include a note, unless its from someone I have previously met.

Do what you want, it’s personal. But I would always update it though it’s not a holy grail for prospecting

Although a personal page I would update to appease your manager, you could always delete the entry later. Myself and my team use LinkedIn religiously. Throughout the pandemic more and more prospects have been working remote. Dialing for dollars in not quite dead but the market has changed.

LinkedIn, along with other tools, can help you start planting the seeds into the mind of the decision markers you are trying to reach.
