re: Revenue Recap [sales salaries: rise and (possible) fall]

Are you ready to talk about everyone's favorite topic - salaries?

Let's dive in!

In 2021, salespeople got a huge boost with an avg. salary increase of 40%. But hold on to your hats, because in 2022, this increase was barely in the single digits.

And we all know the reasons for this - the over-ambitious growth targets - the macros - the missed targets - the layoffs - and whatnot.

Here's where things get spicy - layoffs are still happening. It’s not looking good for sales teams, especially in tech.

We are making a bold prediction here - Sales compensation can take a nosedive into negative territory in 2023.

So, if you're new to this profession and thinking about winging it in sales (like your college senior Bobby did a couple of years back), think twice.

2023 might just be the year that shows you that you can't just coast your way through sales.

Too pessimistic?

Or do you think we should be prepared for the worst?

I’m always of the “hope for the best, but prepare for the worst” mindset. There shouldn’t be any expectations for coasting, but hopefully hard work will pay off.

I personally know a bunch of salespeople who’ve just been winging it all these years, some even getting into president’s club.

I think 2023 is going to be the year of revaluation. Separating the wheat from the chaff, something which was long overdue.

If you're planning on coasting through sales, you shouldn't be in sales.

I mean some things we have no choice but to roll with things we may not know but coasting in general? Nuh bruh.

this is a BOLD prediction. I could totally see salaries going down, but negative? and just to clarify, "negative" means it will go below the 2021 numbers?

Lot of people hiring in my industry. Everyone keeps saying the slowdown is coming, but so far the trends and data say differently.

I think you're in one of the few industries that are unique and hiring due to lack of workers in this space.

True I know tech reps are having a hard time right now. There are a LOT of reps and sales individuals in HVAC though, especially when you consider both residential and commercial/industrial markets. The manufacturers I worked for had thousands of reps.

Maybe the tech reps should make the jump here! It’s a good time.

I hope everyone learns a lesson! A big reason so many untalented reps are coasting is because territories have been shrinking and people will get lucky if they hang around long enough - companies shouldn’t have over hired just to get bodies in seats so yea, I have a negative outlook on pay and availability of good roles.

Numbers are not promising, but hopefully next quarter(s) things get better and the layoff ratio to reach its bottom!
