Recession proof

I got laid off unfortunately and am in the final rounds with a few companies. I'm not looking to get laid off again if/when our economy gets worse, so trying to ensure my next move is a sound one, even if its not the most enjoyable or highest paying. Being without a job sucks. I'm in BD management, so would you choose a huge company for less money or a smaller company in Healthcare SaaS for more money? Large companies seem more stable but they seem to be the ones laying people off left and right.

I don't think there is a "recession-proof" company. There are recession resistant ones, however at the end of the day, you just never know.

I'd look at industries which people need regardless of what's going on in the economy.

Seriously if you think you are getting an offer now take it and see what happens. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

I know it's hard to know. Just tired of getting laid off because companies don't know how to properly manage their finances. Happened during covid and it happened again due to a merger

Depends how much more money to be honest. If the pay is a decent amount more, even if you get laid off you might of made more to make up the difference. This is the absolute worse case scenario too.

No job is untouchable, so do the one you enjoy the most and can have the best life with. Things like work/life balance and pay are higher on my chart

Sorry to hear about that. I will take whatever comes my way then look at switching if needed. Cash flow will be my immediate goal.

"Recession proof" would probably be industries where people tend to make less cuts compared to others like food, healthcare, energy etc. But the dynamics can be very tricky, one would think transportation is among those industries then someone like pandemic has happened...Large/Public companies will also have their hardships with trying to defend the stock price as the utmost importance so you never know if they are stable and usually whoever is hired recently are those who let go first. One would also argue, luxury category is simply "nice to have" and lose blood during recession but data shows otherwise. So it pretty much boils down to if what you're selling truly helps its customers with a tangible ROI and there is so much value that they are able to save because of that. Best of luck by the way ๐Ÿ™

i worked for both at some point. My two cents: big companies may pay less but if they have several divisions you may have the opportunity to jump to another role or division in case anything happens. Not the case with smaller or startups. Consider the bigger picture and the opportunity that allows you more options. I wish you much success!

How fast was the turn around time on those interviews after you got laid off. Iโ€™m curious if the job market is as hot as months prior

It's slowed down significantly since I started looking in early August. I was slow and picky then but have ramped up the urgency. Big mistake since August seems to be much different than now. A lot of jobs closing up.

Its hard to say but while large companies may survive recessions they are also the ones who are the most ruthless when shit gets tough like you say and they have the furthest to fall. I witnessed many smaller companies gain huge market share in the last recession because they didnt spook and kept their staff on and kept pushing for growth. I personally feel you would be better off at a smaller company where your true worth has potential to be recognized by those at the top rather than being a number in the system that can be cut off.

Nothing is truly recession proof. I hope you land somewhere solid though.

Well I landed at a garbage company that I started last week. Took it just to be safe and pay the bills but I have another gig that might come through in the next two weeks thats much better. Sucks to quit a job 3 weeks in but oh well

Short enough to leave off the resume, and you gotta take care of you - nobody else will.

Companies cut people without remorse, you don't owe anything more.

There's no such thing as a recession-proof company. Healthcare SaaS seems solid. Go for more money!
