#1 best option is to have another one lined up.

#2: know your number and stick to it the whole time. from the beginning make sure you say what the number is. and make sure you are willing to walk away if you dont get it or it wont matter.

#3: know the levers you can pull. if you receive and offer and it has base, commission, bonus, and equity. Think about if there is one you would sacrifice to increase the other? less equity for more base for example.

#4. understand WHY you are asking for the number. what is it about your work that deems the price to be fair.

When they ask about salary expectations, I always say "I'm targeting jobs in $X range". And then stick with it.

I somewhat agree but have been in situation of out budgeting and recruiter screen out as “No Go” while situations where I don’t give a number at all leaves more room to build up insights and point of view of why the need to value me correctly. Both approaches have pros and cons try out and see what works.

Ask? Have data to back it up.

Easy to forget to have a number in mind when you're looking for a job, but have that number in mind.
Know why you deserve that number - quota attainment, growing your territory, etc.
And ask for it.

Have options. Diversification is key. Same thing with a full pipe. If you can be honest and say "I have other competitive options, is there any way we can find a compromise or make this work?" then you're sitting pretty. Just remember they might say no.

Start with where you are at and up the number. Then, figure out the ramp and make sure you get it or close to it. The last thing is to get a higher commission percentage for your quota (more OTE without needing more sales). I like throwing in KPI for a portion as it’s free money or something that can be sacrificed for cash somewhere else.

Ask! Let them know that you would love to accept the offer but require X as a salary. Say that if you can get to X then you will gladly sign today.

As everyone mentioned - set expectations at the start of the conversation. If you are desperate in switching and have nothing to back you up, move cautiously.
