Savage Families

I just started a new job that is an amazing opportunity. But, I will be traveling a decent amount. I have a one year old at home and want to be sure I make the most of our time when I'm home and be present as much as possible in the road.

Any of my savage moms or dads out there have any advice on work travel as a parent?

thanks fam!

I dont have a kid but was one once (i know shocking) but my mom travelled a lot growing up so ill give you that perspective.

When you are home, be present, put your phone away, dont worry about emails, just be there.

Sounds simple but it would drive me nuts when she came home and worked half the time she was there. My brother and I told her that, she worked on it, and it got way better.

Kids fly free on most airlines under 2...and after you have enough miles, Mom can hop on the flight as well for cheap. No one is checking if you have double occupancy when you expense...so bring em.

Only works if you have a cool territory ;)

No, too populous. There’s a college there. Lots of named accounts. Try Bakersfield.

I think I have to disagree with you on this.  I remember some of the best times is when I went with my dad on his sales trips.  They were terrible places like Des Moines, but he let me carry his "important" bag and he made me part of the team.  He would try and stay at a place with a pool and he would work while I played in the pool.  We would order room service and it was a bonding experience.  We also went to cool places like HH Island and Naples, FL for our family vacations.  Sometimes you have to stay is a crap place to appreciate the good ones.

When you're a small kid, anyplace with a pool is not a crap place.  :)

I've got a 3 year old, don't do a lot of traveling but when I do I spend a lot of my off time on video calls with the wife and kiddo. Obviously bringing back a gift takes a bit of the sting of dad being gone out.

As your baby gets older, take them with you as much as you can. My dad travels a lot and as kids we would take turns going with him. Was a great way to spend some one on one time with my old man, some of the most impressionable conversations I've ever had were with my father on the road. I'm a 28 year old father and husband and still wish I could go on work trips with my dad.

FaceTime helps. Keep your routine if you can. Fly out late at night and back early so you can maximize time with your kid. It’s worth it.

I would take a shitty flight, time wise to spend additional time with my kids.

You’ll figure this out, but that’s what works for me.

1. Stick to one hotel, airline, and rental car chain. stack those points and take them on a vacation.

2 schedule time to FaceTime with the family.

3. They get used to it. Just make it matter when you’re gone.

Don't have a kid and Im certainly not a kid myself anymore but I Facetime my old man daily! When you are on the road take some time to just check in everyday and video call the family - we are lucky to live in a time when this is possible.

I got a job that was largely inside sales when my kids were small. I did some travel, but was definitely not a road warrior. However, travel when you have a family, of any age, involves your time when you get back. Bribes work, too.

Man that’s hard. I just got a job where I didn’t have to travel. I missed the first year of my kids life traveling and I’d never do it again.

Thanks! Though I couldn’t be the only young parent with this dilemma. It’s tough- you want to provide a certain life for your kids but then does that also take away from other important things 🤷🏽‍♂️

The only suggestion I have here is to spend as much time as possible when at home. Apart from them, you can video call to get a glimpse of your champ smiling, laughing, crying, everyday.

From the kid's perspective, my dad was a traveling salesman when I was growing up, and whenever he was on his way home my Nana would take me to the window to look for his car to arrive and I'd be so excited. Because of this my first word was "car," but we were from Boston so it was "cah." It takes a village and the kid will understand that. He's rooting for you to do well and as long as you spend time with him when you're home, he's gonna be a happy kid.

As a dad of two, you gotta do what you gotta do, you can’t have your cake and eat it ….. unless you crack it and find a way in a different job where you WFH full time like me 😎

Even then, it’s still the same for them, your in the office and you’re not there at all so go figure
