I have respect for the SDR managers in my org, but if one was promoted to be my boss I'd be out the door.

Anyone who voted yes on this either 1) falls into this bucket or 2) is some feel good LI influencer who thinks their opinion matters

how are they supposed to mentor/coach reps without sales experience? How are they supposed to know what to expect in a situation without experience? Build a forecast? Know how to establish quota? there's so much missing there

They are picking up LInkedIn learning courses, shadowing our calls for now - to see how we sell and where’s the gap. It’s tough to take their opinion seriously, tbh

I voted yes under the assumption that the person has some selling experience that the original poster isn’t aware of. But if it’s truly like an accountant who is now managing sales or something, bail.

Not end to end selling. But SDR experience- yes.

A good salesperson does not necessarily make a good sales manager.

But that does NOT mean that they shouldn't have experience in the trenches. How do they coach you on things they haven't done? What value are they adding?

Seems to me like that person's management style would be metrics-focused, and just harping on AE's to dial.

+1 that !
Right now, the manager in question is shadowing all our calls (pan geographies), talking to us on what our selling strategies are and going to LInkedIn learning courses to be able to manage AEs.

But there’s an underlying SDR managerhood (if that’s a word) that pops up. I’m trying to understand if this could work out in the long term.

I'd argue that a great SDR Manager should also have AE experience. More likely your SDR's goals are to become AE's, and if you've never reached that milestone it's difficult to believe you can help them get there too.
