The Salesperson's Dilemma

The Salesperson’s Dilemma

Salespeople have a lot of stress in their lives.

They are pulled in 10 different directions daily.

They have a lot of responsibilities.

A lot of people to keep happy that depend on them.

Spouses, children, pets, friends, co-workers, bosses, subordinates.

Lots of not so fun tasks to do like update the CRM daily.

Provide regular forecasts to management.

The honey-do list.

There is a direct correlation to how hard you work

and how much money you make in sales.

Salespeople depend on commissions to pay their bills.

Base salary is not enough.

With all these people depending on salespeople,

money and commissions are very important.

The dilemma is, how do I know my pay is right.

I know that there are likely errors,

but I can’t or don’t check them for many different reasons.

· Not enough time

· Time is better spent doing almost anything

· Not my job to check the accounting dept’s work – it’s theirs

· Comp plan is too complex – need a PhD in commissions

· Not worth the effort, what am I really going to find

· My company has commission software, I’m all set

· Trust my company does the right thing, never makes mistakes

· And so on…

I heard them all and more.

Salespeople should not have to rely on blind faith and trust their pay is right.

It puts an unnecessary duress in their daily lives,

knowing there are likely errors but can’t or aren’t doing anything about it.

This negatively impacts:

· Morale

· Loyalty

· Motivation

· Productivity

· Key employee retention

The answer is an automated solution.

Salespeople don’t have to waste time checking their pay.

Their time is better spent selling more and earning more

or with family and friends and enjoying hobbies.

It’s time to bring true transparency to commission pay.

I don't really understand the point of your novel-length post, other than you are trying to promote your commission verification services.

@CommissionGuru: Looks like you're new here. First n foremost, you're welcome to the War Room and we truly appreciate your stance on bringing complete transparency to commission pay :)

However, we do have some strong community guidelines to protect the integrity of War Room and for the trust and safety of all savages here. I'll try and summarize the most important ones here, in case you missed them:

1) No hate speech
2) No selling
3) No recruiting
4) No self-promotion
5) No usage of your company name

If you have any suggestions or thoughts on this, or on your overall WR experience, do not hesitate in reaching out / DM-ing!

Cheers!

Thank you for the information @Gasty. My first post I did not realize and I took it down and edited. Since then I have used no hate speech, I am not selling, I am not recruiting, I have not used my company name. The group here seems to think by me educating the audience about the importance to check commissions and how an automated solution could solve this problem without mentioning the solution or company name, is that considered self-promotion? Please advice. I provide examples of commission errors, how to avoid commission errors, why you should check commissions. I am encouraging and educating the audience and frankly confused by the backlash. Is there a word limit on posts, got a complaint about that as well. No one is obligated to read the post if is too long correct. Also am I allowed to repost something I posted on LinkedIn if it meets the rules discussed above. There have been complaints about that as well. Some seriously salty salesmen for someone who is literally only trying to help them. Is it that LinkedIn is the helpful platform and Bravado is the hateful one? My experience and response to my posts literally could not be more opposite.

the problem is that your post sounds like an obvious product pitch that you just deleted the name of the product from to try and skate around the rules while still cramming your pitch in.

No one in here wants to be pitched. This is a forum for sales people to vent about their job, seek advice from others, and talk about past experiences.

As for the LinkedIn comments, see above. Anyone who gives off that "LinkedIn influencer" vibe gets immediately shunned. Those types of posts always come off as disingenuous because we all know its a low key nod to whatever it is they're trying to sell or to generate more clout in the community.

I should also add, I have no authority here whatsoever. Just the impressions I've gotten from your post and having been in the community for awhile now.

@CommissionGuru: Your points are acknowledged. I would be lying if I say I haven't faced commission issues myself in the recent past.

But it's hard to digest why anyone'd NOT accept any sort of help, that can make their life even a percentage better.

Nobody would do that. Not you. Not me. Neither folks on LinkedIn. Nor savages in the War Room.

Someone close to me once said -"𝘞𝘩𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘴𝘦𝘦 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘦𝘭𝘴𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘸𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰𝘨𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳, 𝘮𝘢𝘺𝘣𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺'𝘳𝘦 𝘯𝘰𝘵. 𝘔𝘢𝘺𝘣𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘢𝘳𝘦."

Perhaps we need to dig deeper to find the truth?

Unless you’re in a transactional sales where you have multiple contracts on a commission statement, I’m not sure how automation would be any different. When I land a deal I already know what my commission is going to be and when it’ll be paid out, so as long as the numbers match I’m good.

I track every single deal I close in a spreadsheet and I know my comp plan to a tee. When we get our commissions statement at the end of the month I know exactly how much is supposed to be on it and if it is wrong, exactly what's wrong and why so accounting can fix it.

If you don't track your money or know how you get paid then that's on you.

When a salesperson books a deal and marks it as won in the CRM, they expect a certain amount revenue or gross profit depending what they are paid on. Often times months and months can go by before a rep is paid commission. That number of what you expected to be paid (bookings) compared to what you actually were paid (commissions) can change and a rep never sees or knows why. Companies only report on what was invoiced to the customer. Companies should report from booking to invoicing and ultimately commission with explanation for any variances. If they did that, salespeople would never have to check, they could just review some reports. In high transaction volume settings or overly complex comp plans it is very difficult and some situations impossible to check your pay without automation.
