This doesn’t need to be this hard.

If I want to raise my hand and get started with your SaaS product today (no to low integration effeort required), would I need to talk to an AE first (or an SDR, then an AE)?

My platform is complicated as fuck so it’s for both of our sanity’s sake. If I worked for a company selling a low touch tool though I’d be 100% fine with just sending you a credit card form lol

For sure—and I’d expect it for high effort integration and configuration platforms. For the easy implementation tools I want, just let me in.

Same here, WAY too much complexity for even a trial. When they ask, we drive, they navigate, and it becomes a teaching and sales moment - very warm and fuzzy.

Is your platform something that has a high risk of churn if I don’t talk to an AE first?

We need to create an AWS tenant, hence need to qualify in first.

Also, lot of configuration required, so without me and my SE they'd struggle.

No Freemium or low cost options here, so you're talking to me.   However, our process IS more cumbersome than it needs to be, and we are taking steps to reduce time and frustration.

Pricing is factorial (4-6 key pieces of info and then price booking).

So you gotta talk to me, sorry folks.

Our platform can be super simple and I would say 25% of the IB leads we get today should be handled via self serve channel. This is currently one of my main priorities to get set up so we can scale.

Some implementation and onboarding work required but mostly on our end so if you called me we could have you signed up and onboarding starting within 24 hours

Call me what you want, just sign the damn contract
I'm in the services space so it would be pretty impressive for you to buy without talking to me.

I'm in a super-technical, super specific enterprise vertical....you bet your ass we're having some conversations before either side commits the resources

So his solution doesn’t fit the no to low integration (or configuration) effort category—so this makes sense.

Yup, sorry PBC I missed the part where specifically we were looking at low-to-no integration products.

To add to the discussion you actually want, we recently signed on with Hippo Video (video prospecting). They allowed me to sign up and send videos to prospects before a rep even talked to me. Then, my rep extended my trial while I championed the software to the rest of my team. We happily signed a contract with them not long after

They call me Daddy, Sales Daddy
My old company wanted any leads to go through an SDR first which I thought was messed since they were all so inexperienced. But the SDR mngr was buddies with the CRO and the CRO did it to help the mngr with #s.
Any inbound lead should go straight to a manager (like VP/Dir/CRO) to be distributed straight to the AE over it.

Soooo who would I talk to if I’m ready to buy right now…or can I just sign up and go?

We have a plg/freemium version of the product and a non-freemium version. You get to choose how you want to evaluate

The more complex the platform, the more likely you’re going to have to talk to an AE.
I sell to SMB. You can do a 7 day free trial and put in your own credit card.
I do prefer talking to people first so I can make sure they aren’t going to just churn later.

I feel like I made a good asterisk if to mention no to low integration effort required.

I hate that we’re calling talking to an AE as super broken. So many people buying software are clueless and need someone that can actually advise and provide ideas.

Firstly, “super broken” is sarcasm for sure. Second, I don’t need to talk to an AE to buy some products like Apollo.io—for example, their competitor Lusha let me sign up and get going within 3 minutes.

My leadership team is so fucking stupid they keep changing our process discarding the parts that are working each time.

Our head of sales told me 3 weeks in that he wouldn't have joined had he known the issues we had.

Don't worry I'm trying to jump ship asap.

Buyer focused is the way to go. IE, if ZI had a free trial like seamless.

Website. SDR. AE. AE again. AE's Manager. In that order. Every single time.
