Title Change

Hey Sale Savages,

my company recently went through another round of layoffs and my entire department and 90% of my team are gone. I was fortunate enough to survive. I will now be a part of a new department as the only non-technical sales person, and my title will change from commercial account executive to commercial consultant. I will be helping to create this new department, but my wage is not set to change. It sounds like a demotion in my head. What are your thoughts? What are some title recommendations I could make? in the backdrop of layoffs how can I approach the added responsibility without compensation?

PS - yes I am very grateful to have not been laid off and understand that a lot of very talented individuals have been laid off I don't mean to sound unappreciative.

Change in title means nothing outside your org. And what you eventually put on your resume is up to you as well.

Sorry to hear that and good to know that you were not impacted. You are not wrong in your thoughts but the timing is so I would be cautious to bring that up. May be a few months down the line once things shape up well and you are contributing positively, why not.

wouldn't worry about Job title right now, I'd be worried that 9 out of 10 people were let go from my department and it's put up or shut up time.

Sounds like you not only made the cut, you sailed up. Doesn't strike me as a demotion at all. Same wage, bigger scope, roll with it. You can call yourself whatever you want.

Why is title important? If you need a card to say who you are, then you ain't.

Doesn't sound like a demotion to me. You get to explain on your resume, LI, interviews that the company kept you on to help build out their new division. You could try and suggest adding "manager" in there somewhere to feel more like a promotion but I don't think it will matter that much.

Probably the time to focus on keeping the job longer term, give it a few months before initiating conversations

I would give it 3 to 6 months TBH to see if it's worth staying or not,if no increase though or feel that your new role is just temporary and unsecured, just jump the ship for a better opp!
