To embrace tech sales or career change ?

Hi Folks,


I need your expert advice on this. I live in Toronto, Canada and struggling to get a SDR/BDR job despite of my 6 years of sales experience (4 years tech sales as BDR/SDR and 2 years retail experience). I got laid off (Title- SDR) from my past employer (IT Company) and now its getting frustrating to find a new job. I am thinking to either do a career change to Data Analytics or go for some sort of tech sales Bootcamp to improve my tech sales skills by embracing what I was doing so far. Both option would be a paid/train to hire training from xyz where they are offering job guarantee.


Should anyone of you have been in same boat now or before ? Your help/advice would really appreciated in making my career decision.

If you have 4 years of SDR experience at a Tech company, I dont think you need to do a tech sales bootcamp.

What roles have you been applying to and for how long have you been looking? The market has cooled down in tech so it wont be as easy as it was last year.

I'd agree with this. What kind of IT company was it? Software? Hardware?

Software will be an easier jump into Data Analytics, but anybody with IT sales is talking to tech buyers, so this definitely shouldn't be a hurdle other than the market cooling a bit.

You should have the experience they are looking for. Hiring seems to have slowed, though, so that may be driving the lack of response and/or tepid reactions.

Sorry but 4 years of no career progression is super sus.

Also, why arenโ€™t you applying to AE jobs or CS??

You have too much experience to be an SDR. If you want to go to Ops then yeah go for the bootcamp, but know that with a little resume magic and some references vouching you can and should be able to get some AE roles.

I have a mix of Canadian and foreign exp.(3.5 years foreign BDR, 2 years Canadian Retail Exp and 8 months in a Canadian IT tech company) and I have changed 6 companies in total so far and am showcasing this in my resume. This can be a reason I think of no progress so far and I have been stuck in the same role.

When it comes to AE, there is some requirement to hit the $$$$ quota but as I have been doing SDR roles only, I cannot expect to meet their requirement.

You think I should mould my resume and only show IT exp. and not retail to get AE roles even if I was not having any quota in my previous companies ?

I'd say, start with research into why you are not landing your sales gig / job. The next steps can only be planned when you know why you are failing to find a job.

After that, figure out if this is the way you want to go to.

Do the bootcamp. Keep building your story arch.

Maybe try to get in to something early-stage. Endeavor to survive the turnover and soak up as much rapid-fire experience as you can.

Likely if you can get in as a BDR you can get promoted quickly due to your past experience and likely success.

If you're interested in the tech side of things - why not look at pivoting to the SE side of things? Less hustle, but all of the pros of being in the sales team.

4 years of BDR work means you're overqualified for most BDR/SDR work, unless that is what you want to make a career out of.

But follow your passion. If you're interested in Data Analytics or want to get more technical schooling - go for it! Personally, I got my CCNA and a couple other tech certs early in my career and its heavily paid off for me.

Ideally, the experience you have should have landed you with a job. How are you applying? Are you tweaking your resume? I would suggest you to start writing prospective colleagues to get on a coffee chat. There are many groups in Linkedin where the new SDR roles get posted every now and then as well.

Fuck that paid bootcamp imo there ones that dont cost anything check out RAMPED - also dont show the 6 places and 4 years of sdr exp imo only show one year and one place and great results. Read my posts too

You may need to look at adjusting the way you portray yourself in your resume - maybe rename titles to make it appear like you've had more career progression
