Vacation time

I have definitely taken my fair share of vacation time this year, but I know a couple of my colleagues who have taken only a couple days off. We have unlimited vacation & I read that sometimes this actually causes people to take less time off.

I'm curious how much other people are taking off for vacation. & if you do have unlimited, do you think this causes you to take more time off or less?

How many vacation days have you taken this year?

If you don't use it you lose it here.

I guess that's both a good thing & bad. Good because then it almost forces you to take time off so you don't lose it. But bad because it is nice to have days rollover if you just didn't end up taking vacations that year

Yup. Although it can sometimes be pushed into Q1 for me.

I’ve taken the most days off I ever have in my sales career this year and I am also having the best year I have ever had. I am not sure if there’s a correlation or not.

Same here! This is the most time I've ever taken off & also not having the best year. I struggle to say there's any correlation though because I took the time off when things were slow & not much seemed to happen while I was out

I get to cash out my PTO at the end of every year. It's a huge windfall annually. I never take a day off because that's my 'savings' account.

Oh wow that's actually pretty sick! Why have I never heard of something like this before. So how many days are you technically given?

Hey Wells I like peaceful life and vacation is a way to go. Though we don't have unlimited vacay, I take 2 weeks at a stretch and make sure I am actually vacationing.

You are in a great company if you get unlimited vacay.

Yes making sure you are actually vacationing is huge, meaning stepping away from slack, emails, messages, all of it. Otherwise, are you actually vacationing?

I usually carry over 5 of my 15 for emergencies every year

Edit: This does not include floating or company holidays of course

Yess not having the use it or lose it policy is great so that days can carry over!

I am able to roll 40 hours over YOY and then a payout on any additional hours. Typically get paid out about 40 hours every year and I am given 3 weeks vacation per year but with rollover typically have 4 weeks and will burn 2 weeks every year.

Having days rollover is awesome but to get paid on top of that for any additional unused hours is even better! I guess that's one of the cons to unlimited is you never have the chance to get paid out for unused days

What's wrong with taking a week off even if you don't go out of town?

I typically take a day off here and there as needed and then in the summer do a family vacation.  Finally, I like to save my official vacation days for the last couple weeks of the year.

The company is switched to unlimited vacay though which is a double edged sword.  No accrual  means they don't have to cash you out if you leave.

Yess I always buffer in time to take off days at the end of the year! I agree with unlimited being a double edged sword. Yes it's nice to not have to worry about number of days running out, but then like you said you'll never have the chance to cash out. Plus with unlimited, you still do need approval from management so they could still technically limit you. I haven't had this happen but I guess it's possible

the nice thing about being a remote sales person is technically, I don't have to tell them when I'm taking a day off *wink wink*

Exactly! Go on vacation, work from the beach or the mountains, they don't have to know

Unlimited definitely gets me to take less time than I should. Because then I have to determine what's an appropriate amount of PTO and that's so subjective. So I'm conservative in the number of days I take.

I feel like I am taking less as well. When I had a defined number of days, I would just take random long weekends because I knew I had to use them. With this unlimited policy, I feel like you can't necessarily do that

Take your vacation time people!! What's the point of showing the year in and year out that you don't take time off during the year?

Like I'm honestly asking, I wanna know!

For me, the only reason I wouldn't take vacation time is if I did get paid out on it at the end of the year. But even then I would need to take at least a week to just reset.

Since that's not the case for me, then I definitely take my vacation days

California pays you out on PTO days when you leave the company. If you bank up the max you leave the company with an extra fat paycheck ( roughly $7,000 in my case). So just work hard and rest on weekends. Plus we’re remote these days. Work anywhere.
There are people in the world working 6-7 day weeks. Suck it up and make $$$

I said 10-20 but most of that was recovery from a surgery, so while the drugs were REAL good, I wasn't in much of a state to enjoy it/them.

We’re supposed to take 2 weeks off each year that isn’t counted toward PTO. I haven’t taken any yet, though. Really need to figure this out as not taking any time off has been eating at me. These 2 weeks don’t carry over and neither does any of the PTO. If I hit for the year in November I’ll just take all of December off. Fingers crossed
