Weighing Job Offers - Series B or Series E (close to IPO)

Hi Savages - I'm making a move after 3 years in my current role. I'm in the final stages with 2 companies and struggling to decide between them ... any advice on things to consider or thoughts on how the current market could impact selecting an early vs later stage startup?

  • Same OTE
  • Similar industry - same niche of Information Security I work in now so my network + experience carry over nicely

My goals are to be an individual contributor selling increasingly expensive stuff for cool companies, and build a high level of expertise in a niche industry. Both options align with that objective. Anyone have a crystal ball?

Company A: Very close to IPO, Great RepVue scores, ~1400 employees, solid reputation in the market and mature processes + a suite of several products. Some local presence so I'd have coworkers nearby but don't HAVE to go into an office. Enterprise Hunter Role with ~150 target accounts. I'd get equity but I don't expect it's going to change my life... if the price dips after IPO could I end up penalized somehow between taxes and reduced value stock?

Company B: Freshly funded Series B, I'd be the 5th sales rep (HUGE patch - Mountain + Pacific time zones) and the 80th employee - they have some solid deals in the pipeline that would transfer to me so I'm not starting from scratch. The tech looks really good (1 core product/platform) and I'm not aware of any solid competitors. I was about the 80th hire in my current role and there is something fun about helping build the foundation but I'm sure it will be totally bonkers. Not many female employees right now (I am a woman) - maybe 6 based on LI.. Very likely less work/life balance vs Option A BUT higher risk/reward.

Thanks in advance for any insight you might be able to provide!

Chances are your gut is leading you toward one moreso than the other. Listen to it. ๐Ÿ˜‰

You know what's funny.. I used to say intuition and I changed to saying gut after someone told me intuition sounded "too emotional." Random thoughts...ย

Yea my gut is flip flopping based on whoever I talked to last ... but I do think I have a bit of a preference forming.

How much risk are you able to take? I mean, both actually sound solid, but with the obvious drawback on the series B with potential risk, though from your description, they do seem to have their act together and understand the business/sales.

The nice part about a series B is they likely have some sort of process and structure in place however you can mold it the way that works for you and influence it more. With the series E itโ€™s likely come in and this is the way we do things for the most part. I donโ€™t believe you would be penalized if the IPO drops in the series E case because you are initially offered the stock with a strike price and the choice to exercise them or not so if you donโ€™t own them and they go below the strike price I believe you could just choose not to buy them. The company Iโ€™m at now is the 2nd one that is a series B and I was a part of the last company when we got series C funding and it was pretty cool. Go with the Gut is my best advice to you.

what are the benefits like? thats always something to consider.ย

For me?ย
I would take the one with better work life balance and benefits if the comp is the same.

Good point.. I don't know much more yet than what's on the website so it appears similar. Weirdly the bigger company has no 401k match based on reviews..

ugh I hate that. some times the big companies are just behind on what benefits they need to offer.ย
