What everyone's thoughts on relocation now?

I'm in the middle of a phone interview with an SVP, and he asks "So what are your thoughts on relocating here?" The recruiter mentioned this would be a topic of discussion.

Even knowing this going in, I still felt surprised when asked. Maybe it's the fact that I haven't worked in an office in over a year. But it's interesting to see how some companies are working their way back to have everyone back in the office like it was before 2020, while others decide to go fully remote.

I understand there are plenty of variables that each organization need to consider when making this decision, as well as the employees and candidates. After this past year though, I can't see myself working in an office 5x a week like I used to.

Considering employers now have a much larger talent pool to work with due to remote work, I find it strange to learn that I would have to pack my things and move in order to work for their organization.

Has anyone else been asked this recently? Curious to hear your thoughts.

Happy Selling.

Unless I really wanted to move that city I would not relocate for a company with remote work nowadays

Agreed. In my case, I could see myself moving there at some point, but not at this very moment.  It'll be interesting to see how flexible they are willing to be if things were to go in the right direction.

Same. If the offer was from San Diego then I'd move in a heartbeat haha. On the other hand if they ask me to move to Dakota, then I'd prefer remote. Nothing against Dakota, just not my type of place

I've been interested in relocating. Especially with the options to work remote. I'd love to move somewhere that I LOVE and be able to work from home. That is my goal for 2021-2022.

I feel this really depends on the job you plan to do. But I would say AE and higher should be around the area you plan to sell in.

When I took this recent job, I had another offer: great pay, 30hrs a week, joker AM job. No responsibility. Just answer the clients we already have. And as long as the hours lined up 25% with EST I was good to go. I had dreams of moving to Slovakia and drinking with my neighbors. Learning to play the accordion. But I'm not a sit around and hang out kinda guy, so I took the busy job instead.

I couldn't do this job fully remote and I feel like it would be a lot harder fully remote. But any AM or SDR type job where you're just on phone or email all day anyway... no reason why you can't do that from anywhere.

Call me what you want, just sign the damn contract
PASS. This doesn't sound like a sub 25 person company so that's ridiculous. Any company requiring you to relocate doesn't get it.

I wouldn't relocate for a job in which I would then have to go into the office 5 days a week. I would totally relocate to a new city to try it out but that's not why the SVP is asking you this. It sounds like they have an in office culture that they want you to be apart of. I have been seeing some companies still requiring this and hoping to be back in the office this year. The fact is that a lot of candidates want to work remotely and if companies want to grow and hire the best talent than they are going to have to be flexible with working locations - plain and simple. This shift will take a while because there is still a good chunk of people that want to be in an office but more and more I see companies shifting to remote first.

If you can organize 1 week a month in x city, I think it's nice. People in my industry can work on the west coast and live in the East, but have to be at the office a week or two a month (pre pandemic).

A few people I knew lived in Toronto, where the customers were, but we located West. Very West.

Yes I have seen this before for sure, and makes a lot of sense to me.  I'd say it's a bit of an easier sell to bring that up if there was an offer on the table.  If they really want you at the organization, they'll try and work with you.

Update: Probably won't have to worry about this decision.  Presentation did not go well. Not the end of the world, since I could sense from the conversations and the presentation deck I was given was all about how great their product is for their industry, and not digging into the why they do it.

Has anyone taken any sales training from the Sandler Sales System? My company is putting me through their program right now, and it seems like they say the same thing over and over again...?
