what kind of buyer are you?

I find myself WANTING to be sold to when I have to buy something.

(car, couch, hot tub what ever it is)

I try to see what kind of questions they will ask, and try to not show any real positive signs of what I like. I feel like I want the person to have to work to earn my business.

My wife walks in tells them what she wants, and if they have it she will pay for it. no asking for discounts or anything. the ideal buyer haha!

Anyone else end up being a "tough" buyer just because we are jaded from selling??

I do all my research. I give the salesperson my order and the opportunity to sell me something else if they feel it’s materially better. My price is set in my head and I try to get the best deal, but if urgency is taking the wheel then sometimes I’ll take speed over the thrill of the deal. This also goes for software that I buy.

I fucking hate bad sales people. I have walked away based on their inability to fulfill simple things, too. Like walking away from a finance document at a dealership because they failed to fulfill their promise of a free accessory.

I’ve walked away from two finance departments now because I hated the energy they brought to the table. It definitely sucks for the sales guy/gal, but I’m not about to let someone make me feel “less than” while I’m doing a large deal with them. Capital F on the Fuck That.

I do my research and then go in ready to buy. I don't want anyone to talk to me or try to help.

Sometimes I want them to try though…I want the mid-tier but what happens if they go and pitch top tier? Can I get them to match price because I already am set on mid?

Good point! Luckily I am at the point in my life where I can be bougie when pulling the trigger on an item I need/want.
If price matching is something real maybe I should play the game, but I have never even asked. That's probably a bad move by me, but I usually want to get in and get out.

I shop online for that reason, unless I want the pampering experience of something truly high end.

Same! There is basically nothing available at the stores these days and you are basically forced to shop on-line.

It depends on what the product service is. Most of the time, I know exactly what I want and have done the research for it, so price objection is out the window for me. But if it's an "on a whim" purchase, then yeah, sell the shit out of me or you aren't getting my dollar bill.

Bought my car, knew exactly what I wanted, was redirected professionally on an accessory, left with a car. The BEST rep ever. She listened and advised and didn't get in my way by trying to oversell. No clear coat, Mr. Lundegaard!

The other experience worth noting was when my husband and I went to Home Depot to purchase a replacement toilet seat, and left with an appointment for solar panels - which we now have installed on our house. Appointment setter caught us at a good time for a couple of reasons - we weren't in a hurry, and after years of not wanting to invest in the technology because it was too expensive and the return didn't match the investment just yet - was able to discuss the value, alleviate the concerns I'd had about the technology, and got us set up with a rep. I'm usually a PIA because I know what I want and I don't like to be "sold" but I can appreciate a professional in action. Someone who listens and can prove out the value while not overselling: perfection.

I research the product and know what I want walking in. I lean towards your wife because I don't like to waste time or fuck around. Ya feel?

I totally appreciate when someone does their job the right way, whether it's a non-pushy, non-arrogant sale person, or an attentive, competent waiter. These people are like a breath of fresh air compared to rest of the schmucks out there. So, I guess that makes me a tough buyer if they're not like that. 🤠

I'm an easy buyer if my problem is being solved accordingly.

But, and I swear to god this works maybe 50% of the time, I've begun asking for discounts when I'm buying anything (outside of going out to eat and what not).

Chris Voss talked about this with hotels and room upgrades.

I will say I am very much like yourself, I want them to sell me but I don't want them to be the stereotypical used car salesman.
I will say I also use those times to do a bit of recruiting, I will ask them how long they have been there, how is with hitting their quota/budget, what do they wish was different, etc. Can typically get a pretty good feel if they do enjoy what they are doing and also if they are open to a change because finding good people is really tough at times.

I try to be “tough” for these larger purchases but my wife usual interferes in the buying process and won’t let me have my fun haha!
