When is it appropriate to get CEO involved at startup

We're an early stage startup. I'm the only sales hire.

What is the appropriate stage to invite the CEO into calls with prospective accounts? Since this is an early startup, he's accessible and already plays a large part of the sales process.

It makes us look small right off the bat but honestly it's super niche healthcare IT, these guys know the established big fish already and we're def not one of them.

The pros is credibility, plus he's a pretty good salesperson in his own way.

Conflicted since I have a discovery call today with 4 executives at one of our larger target accounts. The original scheduler has ignored my emails about what they're looking for so it's a complete mystery call.

Should I invite CEO to the call?

In the beginning you may want CEO involved on every call

Yep - Startup Chief from the Start. Could even be a few years depending on fast the process gets built, which depends on lots of factors. It also shows commitment when the one who created it is right there.

Always involve the CEO when you’re dealing with high value prospects. They appreciate it, the CEO appreciates it, and you will appreciate it when they take responsibility for the outcome.

I am with this one. Plus, CEOs feel like they have made a big impact because of you which really pleases their ego.

All of the above. Nothing like a little diversification of the blame if the deal tanks, too.

Definitely invite him. There’s not much downside to it and I think both of you will be glad you brought more firepower to a high value prospect.

hmm never been at a company this small, but I think I'd have an open conversation with the CEO and ask him when he wants to be brought in. If the company is as green as you say, then I would imagine he wants to get involved in sales call early.

If your CEO is not thirsty to learn more about customers challenges so they can grow the company to solve those pain points, then they may not have the chops for the long haul

They call me Daddy, Sales Daddy
A good CEO at a start up will wear multiple hats and carry multiple business cards, depending on who the audience is. Founder, CEO, VP Sales, Chief of Business Dev, Chief Engineer, etc... Titles are meaningless.

Leverage your CEO, but don't call him that during the call.

Opportunity cost question. Yes on one hand because its 4 executives and most likely all with greater domain expertise hence you may face though questions to which your technical knowledge may be limited to.

The other side of the coin is that more often than not the person who will most likely then carry the point of contact will be the CEO hence it will make it such that the deal will be micromanaged and the Executives will use the fact that they have access to the CEO directly and hence will push to anchor the pricing drastically and chances are you won't be able to do anything about it then.

For a newly funded startup, if they want to hire a VP of sales/BD person. What things should they consider?

Closed a $60k deal after my manager said we’ve lost this after the two people I was speaking to didn’t feel like introducing us to the CEO until they figured out some technical aspects. It felt so good.

Curious if anyone has experience getting got ghosted for a week in the final stages of the 4 qtr, with a 10M deal…and procurement is not responsive because they’re trying to source a crappy solution from a cloud partner that’s not gonna work… Or just me?
