When was the last time you worked for a ๐Ÿ’ฉ CEO? My last job had a nobhead with a sales background that couldnโ€™t actually sell.

Example, my last CEO sold a deal we cut an arm and leg off for just to lose an 8k MRR deal for a new 9k MRR deal.ย

He sold to the parent company in the new deal and we lost the sister company. We didn't navigate an existing contract/no one did the research.ย

The entire culture of the company suffers if the CEO is not a hustler!
If CEOโ€™s donโ€™t do leg work from time to time, they might be seen as just โ€œThe Leadershipโ€. A CEO doing leg work is seen is an inspiration.

Itโ€™s still perplexing to me that the default term for management has evolved into leadership. It rarely fits

I worked at an agency that was solely directed by the CEO. There were other "leaders" but they always defaulted to the CEO's decision. This CEO constantly told us he had more experience and that's how he shut down any confrontation or argument - he didn't but when that was pointed out he would then ice out and fire those people. He also loved to talk about how poor he was growing up but turns out it was a huge lie and his father was insanely wealthy - so just one side of his family was kinda poor but not the multi million dollar home he grew up in.

Long story short, I left after a year. I got let go for passing on bad deals even though I broke every record at the company. Made it seem like it was completely my fault and that we had talked about it - which of course we didn't. I'll never forget being 150% of quota for the year and then getting shit canned on a random thursday. Thankfully got a huge severance and a new job in about 2.5 weeks. Best month ever.

I later learned they didn't expect to pay me so much and decided firing me and replacing me with 2 people who had never sold a day in their life was wise. I know at least one of those people got fired about 6 months after me. Go figure.

Bad CEOs are living proof that culture rots from the head down. If your CEO is showing you they're a piece of shit, believe them and get out. Judge them harshly because they're at the top - investigate red flags and listen to your gut.

companies trying to limit how much sales makes is so monumentally stupid and short sighted as if they forget youre getting a percentage of the fat chunk going to their pockets

The most incompetent CEO Iโ€™ve ever worked with did not understand how to trust the expertise of the team or how to delegate responsibilities. Had to be the driving force behind everything. Would often jeopardize my deals. Would also point to what sounded like promising potential avenues for the product. I called him out during a team meeting and told him that he has made zero material progress on any of the avenues heโ€™s been pointing to for the last year - this cornered him to try to move the needle on one of the initiatives and what do you know? It was completely dead in the water as soon as he actually tried to pursue it and this was something he had been hyping up for 12 months, if not longer.
It all culminated into telling him to go fuck himself and I got fired. I couldnโ€™t handle anymore 2 hour phone calls after business hours going over the same pricing model conversations. Our product had zero competitive differentiation in a saturated market and he kept trying to convince me that we needed to price every individual feature of the platform.

The post is wild, at first I read the comments instead of the post.

Then reading the post I found it very wild the CEO reached out.

Last company the ceo was an absolute pile. Thinks he is a genius. Makes people read books like a book club. And did everything wrong. Gave promotions then later would rescind them. Stopped company from growing. Said during covid would not fire employees and then fired like 60 people ~35% of the company. He is and was awful. No idea how he is still there. Investors should kick him to the curb.

Last four CEOs I worked for: died (he was in his 80s), forced out after a merger, still there, forced out after yet another round of layoffs and the company failing to go public by its goal date.

The guy who is still there is probably the slimiest person I've ever met. I probably wouldn't have taken the job if meeting with him had been a part of the interview process.

I unfortunately found my people in the comments. I wish I was alone with working for an absolute psychopath of a CEO.

I don't get this... Like how could he have been more professional in communicating!?

This CEO just made it VERY clear why Abstrakt is a bad place to work.

Anybody look into who the guy he tagged, Eric Watkins, is?

I actually worked here for a year. I interviewed with Scott who at the time interviewed every hire, not sure if thats still the case given how much they've grown. Honestly he's a smart guy but a workaholic "work is life" guy who wants everyone else to be like that. But he hires 95% people straight out of college and most people wont have that personality.
What he did is a terrible look, but I wouldn't actually call him a bad CEO. He's actually pretty impressive in what he's done.

I am sick and tired of looking for jobs in Sales. A nurse and a construction engineer get jobs in Tech Sales, while a product owner has to beg them on LinkedIn for an opportunity to prove himself.

When a new company that just hired you performs a background check on previous job roles, do they know if you got fired? Or the extent of it? Or they just check to make sure you worked the dates you say you worked?
