8 am meeting on Monday: Fine or Not?

A bit of background, I'm at a company where most of the team is in London. The company recently expanded into the U.S., and so for now, we are only 5 people within the U.S.

They decided last week that we'll have a weekly 8 am all-hands sales meeting on Monday.

I just experimented my first 8 am meeting, and I'm not a fan. First, I'm not a morning person at all, and second, I hate internal meetings.

Not seeking advice. I'm just curious, am I the only one that thinks having an 8 am meeting on a Monday should be illegal? Like I get the time zone thing but c'mon put it at 9 am... It's a 6 hours difference, so for the London folks it'll be 2 pm instead of 1

I think its dumb IF everyone is in the same time zone, if you have co-workers in PST and EST and you are working in California, it makes sense to have 8am.

So in your case since there is only 5 employees in the US the rest in London, it doesn't surprise me you have an 8am meeting

Since it's a standing internal meeting, it's out of the way before the meat of your day starts, I'm not seeing an issue.

It's worlds away from a 7 am meeting on Monday set by an SDR and cancelled at 6:30 am same day.

It's remote, right? So roll out of bed at 7, get your coffee on, scan your emails and tackle the week!

Yeah, that'd be no fun...

Don't know about the 7 am wake-up, did 7:40 this morning but maybe one day! haha

Yeah, so this is a great way to kick off your day.

I guess I could tell you about the 6:30 am calls I have from time to time to support the Europeans at some of my customers.

I think 8 am is fine for me. But then again, I understand with you not being a morning person. At the same time, It's called adulting.

Right, part of the process I guess haha I've always wanted to be a morning person anyways so maybe that's my first step.

right that was my first thought. No one loves 8am meetings but welcome to having a grown up job. Your day starts in the morning.

If you have little kids any 8 am meeting is pretty much impossible, let alone a Monday morning.

Not a morning person, monday 8 am is quite brutal for me. I was on the other side of the boat, my boss who was based in US had to be very early all the time to catch up with the rest of the team in Europe.

Yeah, my boss is up at 6-7 am to catch up with the team. I've told him I'll be up in a heartbeat if it's an external meeting. But for internal meetings, 8 am is my max lol

Seem unnecessary to me. But also makes some sense given the size of the US team and timing in London. 1:00 is right after lunch, 2:00 is a lot more disruptive

To a point, a weekly meeting at 8am is fine.

If it is an hour of an exec constantly repeating things that everyone already knows, is "my way of selling or the highway", and everyone is disengaged, maybe not.

It's the typical internal meeting of "this is what we did last week, what did you guys do?" Nothing serious, all of it could be said in an email.

I have no issues with an 8 AM meeting any other day but Monday. I have found that having meetings at 8 AM on a Monday morning don't really accomplish anything but pissing off the group for the entire week. Also that time spent is typically dealing with the BS that has come in over the weekend and getting it handled first thing.

Not a bad move. Do it a few times, show your a team player.
Then ask for the change. You should ask for it to be at 3:30 pm your time ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

In this case, not super dumb because of the intense time difference, but I do agree that they could have put it at 2 pm to make it a bit more convenient for the rest of the team.

I'm actually in a verrrry similar position where the majority of my colleagues & my manager are based in Finland. So, we have our weekly meeting at 8AM my time on Monday morning. At first it was the worst but I did eventually get used to it & now I actually kind of like it. It basically forces me to get out of bed on Monday morning

I wouldn't call it dumb, but it's annoying for sure. I need at least 2 hours to get my shit together from all the weekend excess sleeping. Sort my emails, get back to "Ohhhhh what's this jobbb".

Can't imagine a call at 8Am, I would lose it. Not going to be productive from me.

It's mostly the Monday part that annoys me, especially if it's Monday morning. It's really not uncommon to have emails/missed calls during the weekend, so I like my Monday mornings to be empty, that gives me the time to catch up and make sure I'm up and running for the week.

My personal preference, Tuesday morning meeting. You have time to catch up on the weekend and what you didn't finish last week and can still leverage the information shared in meeting for the rest of the week

Better than my old weekly 4pm meetings on Friday.

And I was in a similar position but founders in other countries 12 & 7 hours ahead of me. They asked for 3 or 4am meetings.. nah bro, I want 70% ownership for that or you can kick rocks

8 am meetings are fine. But not on Mondays... There's nothing new to report tell that you could not have done it on Friday. Usually, you have to deal with a couple of urgent needs that popped up over the weekend. Best to do it Monday PM or Tuesday AM.

I think it's a way for some insecure leaders to incorrectly believe that they could get more out of their teams on a Monday, with this strategy. Thet couldn't be more wrong is what I think.
