Account Managers - How many accounts do you manage and what size/ARR?

For more context, please add type of product.

I manage 50 accounts ranging from $10K - $1M for complex SaaS platform. I feel like I’m getting buried in work since we also have no CSMs, and deal with all escalations from marketing, support, finance.. etc. wondering if I need to stop complaining or this is actually absurd.

I’ve heard of people managing upwards 300 accounts but their software was very simple and had multiple colleagues helping out with different aspects of sales/am (renewals, demos, csms etc).

TLDR:

  • How many accounts do you manage?
  • What is the average deal size?
  • What is your quota?
  • What is your product?
  • What percentage of your commission comes from: renewals, upsells, new clients

Not an AM right now but my 2c. Proportion the amount of time to the account.

Yeah this sounds obvious but you’d be surprised how often the 10K accounts suck up more time than they are worth

First off - YOU are the csm. That’s the role of most AMs.

Second - just do what you can.

Wow wondering why there are no CSMs. It’s pretty simple and straightforward - we do new new business, CSMs build and maintain the long term relationship and we have AMs handling the account for any renewals/upsells.

Different title similar role, we have a CSM so not managing support. Handling renewals, expansion, contracts/finance, all escalations, new product roll outs.
- 115 accounts
- deal size 15k-150k
- quota <10% churn, 45k/per month between renewal and expansion
- complex SasS platform
- commission is roughly 80% exp, 15% renewals, 5% completely new business

Work load has definitely gotten a bit much and looking to hire a Jr role in the next month or two. From others I know at similar sized companies I’d say the work load is typical of start companies, or companies with less than 100 employees.

My territory is about 1000 accounts, 200 customers to upsell. Quota is just a standard number and doesn't matter how I get there.

yikes, thats a ton! if you have to handle all the renewals and daily request from the customers that is a TON of work, but if you are ALSO doing those escalations? that is WAYYY too much
