Advice on Whether to Swap Jobs or Not

Hey all.

Recently accepted a position as an AE in the freight sector, something I don't have experience with. I initially thought it would be the best career move as I am younger and getting that AE title sounded nice. However, I did have some hang-ups as it is not the industry I want to be long-term and I do need to relocate for it and that is proving to be significantly more expensive than I had originally thought. In addition, it just really does not seem like a place to grow and kind of a lame position in all honesty.

I recently received an additional account management offer for a medical software company that aligns a lot more with where I see myself long term. Base salary is higher, completely remote, seems to have good career trajectory and culture is much more of a fit for me from what I've seen.

The purpose of this is really to just try to garner some opinions on this. What would you do? I've accepted the Freight AE position already and have just started training but I cannot see myself in this role and moving would set back any pay increase I would be seeing for some time.

Is it worth sticking it out in an industry I do not want to be in and eating the heavy upfront moving costs to obtain that AE title then hope to someday transfer back into SaaS? Or would it be beneficial to continue down a slower growth path of Account Management in the field I would prefer to stay in?

Do whatโ€™s best for you? If you need to leave and itโ€™s a better role do it. Donโ€™t stay a year just to stay a year

Yeah definitely, guess there really isn't a question there. My main concern is passing up an account executive role for something that may not be as big of a title on a resume in the future. Wondering how much that truly matters.

The other role title is Account Manager if I am reading this correctly so I wouldnโ€™t say that hurts your career going from AE to Account Manager

It sounds like you're really leaning toward the AM position.

Do what's best for you. It won't be the first time someone has quit early on. Better to find out sooner rather than later and 1) not waste anyone's time, including yours and 2) keep people from being miserable, particularly you.

What makes the AE role lame and is the culture bad or just not spectacular? I've had roles I didn't particuarly love, but I was able to do great work there and it made me much more marketable. Unless you think you would be miserable/make no money, I would stick it out for a year and pivot back to the industry you want to be in but at the AE level.

Fair perspective and I am definitely considering it.

To give more detail - The main reason is the premise of the deals here. All it would be is bringing offerings to clients that are the same as any other freight company but with attempts at getting them better discounts.

Doesn't really seem like real sales experience that would translate. These clients have to use one of the large carriers regardless so it's just about whichever can get them the highest discount margin at the time.

In addition, there does not appear to be any upward mobility, the terminal is incredibly depressing and there really is no culture. There is the union non-salaried workers, management of them, then the sales team that is sort of separate and I am the only one operating out of my territory. Training has been here is a massive binder, read it, shadow the operations manager who has no knowledge of your job/clients and then get after it.

Really just not feeling the position at all. Hopefully that makes sense. With other opportunities, it just seems like a safe and sad route to settle on but who knows maybe I am being too judgmental of it.

Seems like the answer is in the question. It looks to me that you`ve already made up your mind about the AM job :) I`d lean toward it too if I were in your place, looks like a better position for you right now.

I wouldn't go through an expensive relocation unless I was REALLY excited for the opportunity.
