Any chance i could get a job?

Hey Folks

Currently in month 4 of an AE sales job - Expected to close on a few touchpoints over the phone. Very call mill like. Micromanagement. So very stressful and my mental health has really taken a beating.

Anyways I'm looking at BDR jobs in a healthier sales organization.

Think 4 months of sales experience might help or have me seen as a job hopper?

I actually think a few months is easier to explain away than a year or so - you can tell a story around how it simply wasn’t a fit, tried to make it work and parted ways.

Great perspective! I just need to move for my mental health. I like sales and want to stay in it! I've closed deals and all. Just want to be in a healthier environment

I totally get that! I’ve worked at organizations like that before unfortunately, and it’s not worth any amount of money

Sorry that happened to you as well. Do you think the line of it's easier to get a job if you already have one applies in the sales world? Any tips on resume preparation etc?

Some companies are inevitably going to see a 4 month tenure as a black eye. Frankly I wouldn't worry about that. If a company is more concerned about a short tenure somewhere else than they are about why someone would leave said company after 4 months I probably wouldn't be the right fit for them anyways.

Thanks for the no bs and honesty! I will keep that in mind and hopefully it won't be to big of a black eye 😅

Firstly your mental health is way more important than a shitty micromanaging and shitty company. Most good employers will know this and understand it. It is important to be straight up and honest if and when they ask about it. Second you should always look for opportunities to better yourself and family. When you are looking for other companies to work for look and see what their core values are and do those values align with yours. If they do then you will excel and you will find yourself happier and healthier. When you are in an interview ask them what they are, if they are a company worth a damn then they should have no problem telling you what they are. Lastly you should also look inward and see if there is something that maybe you need to change or maybe there is a perspective that you don’t see quite yet. I would suggest reading The No Complaining Rule by Jon Gordon or Extreme Ownership by Jocko Willink and Leif Babin. These books are an amazing tool and will help you not just professionally but personally as well, and they are a great tool to help with your mental health.

Hey outlawbucker,
Thanks for such a long and thoughtful response. Re: the mental health its been really important to me. Was in a very dark hole especially during covid and I pulled myself out of it but I feel like the stress of the job has been hard. I agree with you - it's important to find a company I believe in and that's transparent about what they truly are. Love jocko!! I have all his books. I will read it again to refresh. Thank you

You bet. I have been in your shoes as well with depression and it blows! I fight it everyday and the people that has helped me is Jocko, Andy Stumpf, Tim Kennedy and Mike Glover. If you need anything reach out to me, even if it is to just decompress a little bit.

So to answer your question yes, the market is so crazy right now and there aren’t that many BDRs out there, you’ll have a new opportunity in no time. You could even look for an AE position tbh

I have 7 months of sales experience so far and I’ve been at 3 different companies. The first company was toxic as hell. The second one, they lied to me in my interviews. And now, I’m at a third company. I did a high due diligence on this one to make sure I’m not going to leave anything soon. As long as you know how to talk in interviews, you are good to go.

I hear ya! I don't have much prospecting experience and only a few months closing experience. I'll try for both roles. I think I can talk confidently and present myself as such- any resume prep tips as well? Thanks!

Was in the exact same situation last year. I left because of the micromanagement and the stress. So happy where I’m now.
