Can I rant real quick about my boss?

my boss is the Chief Commercial officer.

We got intel a few weeks ago that the largest account in my book is looking for the solution I sell.

AWESOME.

my and the SDR do out reach, my boss looks for connections to set up the intro call.

GO TEAM!

nothing happens.

then while im on PTO i find out that the VP of that account set a meeting with my boss for Today. (more good news!)

Except my boss NEVER tells me about it, never invites me to the discovery call and runs it by him self.

I messaged him 3 times about letting me in on the conversation for OBVIOUS reasons, but mainly because I know he SUCKS at discovery.

he slacks me after saying this is a "Slam dunk and we should chat later"

im glad it went well, but im SO pissed he ran it without me.

im allowed to be pissed right???

Doesn't sound like much of a leader. It's in everyone's best interest to have you there. Unless it was in person and the know each other, I don't see another reason why it would make sense to exclude you.

Are you sure he wasn't trying to help you out while you were gone? Yes the lack of communication sucks, I agree.

Forgot about the PTO aspect, you could be right. But I’d still expect an email heads up

Yeah, very uncool. Got into the 1:1 exec alignment a little early.

I hope it works out anyway. Sounds like he got excited and wanted to help, but hopefully didn't get too far over his skiis.

You’re giving me PTSD flashbacks… this is never ok. Not even if you were on PTO when the meeting was set. If you’re expected to handle the account then that means you’re accountable for whatever happens with it and if you’re not given the opportunity to be involved the you’re set up for failure.

Totally allowed to be pissed.

And personally, if one more VP or higher tells me something is a "slam dunk", my eyes will roll so back in the back of my head they'll be stuck.

EXACTLY!!!! like i just wont believe anything he says now because there is a good chance he missed something, or had happy ears or what ever.

Every time I hear "slam dunk" I hear "missing discovery item that's going to be critical", and immediately move the opp in my mind to a 50% chance.

You absolutely should be pissed and good for you on picking this place to rant. Get it out of your system here and not in the office where it will only play out badly for you.

Your boss wanted to play sales guy today, much like my little daughter likes to play with dolls and pretend to be a mommy. She plays mommy for a couple hours and then becomes my little girl again. Much like your boss wanted to slum it as a sales guy again and then return to his ivory tower to brag about how he "still has it".

If it becomes a pattern, then I would worry. But its probably a 1-off thing.

Sounds like someone (your boss) wants the entire credit for this. You'd be in a better position to tell if it's an org. culture problem or people(boss) problem.

Bad leader but if you were on PTO he should have at least told you to take the time off and that he will handle it but he should not have left you in the dark.

Sounds like a pretty toxic guy. A person like that is tough to work for as they can be threatened by their subordinates performance

I know it’s easier said than done, but next time I’d actually call him and have a convo, that way he has to give you AN answer (even if it’s silence) it’s very easy to hide behind missed messages etc. Fuck that guy and hope you manage this ❤️

thanks boss. yeah i for sure could have called him. i was a little over emotional in the moment and almost didnt even message him. but i figured I needed to at least do that.

i was able to have a conversation with him about it and there were some key aspect he did not share that make sense now. I still disagree with his approach and his reasoning but at least i know whats going on and he understands that i was confused by his choice.

Do you still get credit for the deal compensation wise even if your boss closes it? Because if so, then I guess it's ok (not ideal, but fine). If they would say you get no commish on it, then for sure not a good thing and pretty unfair

i would still get credit for it. there is no way he can close a deal without me. the sales cycles are too long.

What to ask instead of "How are you?" on a call? Because let's be real, we're all doing horribly.
