Career Change. Need advice!

Hello All,

I am a former federal LEO and pursue a career in tech sales. Considering I don't have much experience in tech but I do have some experience in sales (haven't done sales in about 10 years), how do you think I should go about tweaking my resume or what shall I write in a cover letter to express my interest in entering into the tech sales industry?

Thank you!

Target companies which sell to PS. Think about the technologies you have used in the past and reach out to those companies. Many are VERY interested in former LEOs.

You wonโ€™t need to change your resume up much since they know the value you are already bringing in.

To add to this, do you happen to have any security clearances? There are a number of jobs where this becomes a significant value-add.

Unfortunately, no. Recently, I was cleared for a top security clearance with USMS but I decided to opt out to enter tech.

I can't speak to tech sales but they should be ripe for getting work at an equipment manufacturer, dealer/reseller or training agency.

Start by finding local companies, preferably state-level distributors of common equipment (ASP, GLOCK, etc) and send in resumes IN PERSON since this entire industry is all about face-to-face relationships.

I would reach out to all the connection you made in sales 10 years ago, maybe they can refer you

so my best advice is to look for a tech company that is closely related to what you have been involved with.

You need to ask your self "what company would value the knowledge i have (and am able to share)"

since you dont have tech experience, or recent sales experience you really need to leverage your knowledge of certain problems organizations have, knowledge of certain types of ppl that would BUY a software or knowledge of a particular industry.

once you figure that out, then start thinking about the best way to convey your knowledge.

Try editing your resume in a way that even in a non-sales job you've done before, you highlight the sales skills you have gained.
Considering you haven't done sales in 10 years, this might be a great starter for now. With more interviews you appear for, you'll get a fair understanding of what the companies are genuinely looking for and you can then tweak it accordingly.

Tip: Rather than mentioning that you haven't done sales in 10 years (negative connotation), you can mention something you have really done.

Most likely you will want to target an SDR position to get your foot in the door for sales.

mention only relevant experience. be honest with the response as to why you want to enter tech sales as it shows in the interview.

speak less about older experience and most about the most recent one
