CFO is the new CEO?

From personal experience and from seeing the market and even several clients that are Series A - Series D, I've noticed that CEOs passed the baton to board backed CFOs to forecast growth through hiring more reps, and to then crunch some numbers to fire and reduce costs for runway.

Have you noticed something similar?

Crunching numbers is kinda what CFOs do. Its their thing.

CFOs have always been the gatekeeper to growth and the arbiter of cuts. They understand the numbers better than anyone, and are there to advise the CEO on the operating status of the company.

Most CEOs have large enough egos to make it seem like they are in control, but in reality, a team behind them is pulling their puppet strings.

That sounds accurate.

The best jobs I've had have been led by former sales/operations or engineering backgrounds.

exactly! A lot of people think the CFO is just a post fact number cruncher. However, they have a hughe amount of decision power.

I agree with that for companies with large headcount, but it's really unlikely to happen with the others with lower ones!

I don't think CFOs tend to make good CEOs as they tend to be risk-averse. I am not saying that is a bad thing, but CEOs need to be visionaries to move the company towards big-picture goals which don't always align with cost-savings.
