Commercial vs SMB/mid market

How would you guys define a commercial sales team relative to SMB or Mid-market?  My gut says commercial could include both, higher than SMB, maybe slightly below just a pure mid market role.

I’ve never quite fully understood commercial, tbh. It’s definitely not enterprise but I’d say it varies company to company. @moneyovermatter ‘s recent post showed that he’s commercial at Zoom and making absolute BANK that I can’t imagine would be possible as SMB or even MM

Very true, probably an anomaly. My girlfriend is a Manager at DocuSign and their SMB/COMM reps don’t even make close to what I’m making

Most reps don't come close to what you're making, tbh. :)

Yeah seems like just a new term over the past couple years to address egos.

Previous company: SMB/MM - Commercial - Enterprise - Strategic.

Commercial is often larger companies, but territory rather than named accounts, at least in this example.

its all over the place. ive had companies where its

SMB
MM
Commercial
Enterprise

but its just all different ways to segment out reps its not super important in my mind.

💯 varies on your product and your company.

Agreed. Not super important at all.

I manage an SMB team, and wondered if that turns slightly experienced candidates off due to pride/ego. Didn't know if commercial fit what we cover, hence going to the community.

Some companies separate segments based on ARR, location counts, or employee count.

What industry are you in?

Tech. So mostly wondering what your gut reaction is if you saw a job opening that said “commercial” in tech.

Sounds like an arbitrary division your company created.

We don't have commercial, which is why I asked. Have seen it but not personally familiar with how most people define it.

Interesting to see others answers cause what I’ve seen is smb & commercial are synonymous then MM, Ent, strat.
Some companies I’m seeing hiring “corporate” AEs and not even sure where that segment might fit in

I feel like commercial is almost SMB+
