Dry January (and beyond)

After a blitz of conferences from the end of September through December (with networking receptions multiple times a week), 6 family Christmas parties, a New Year's gathering, and the Rose Bowl (Go Blue), I'm taking a break from the hooch.

Might even carry the fast all the way through to Easter for my liver's sake.

Anyone else get burnt out on boozing, work related or otherwise?

Ever take a step back from drinking? (work related or otherwise)

Clean and sober for some time now. One of the best decisions I ever made.

Do you ever hit the conference circuit? Feels like drinking is basically built into the programming at every conference I go to. Obviously I don't go hard or anything & maintain professional decorum, but I'm curious if it's ever awkward being at a networking reception with no drink in your hand.

I’m not a big on dry January person, but do set limits. Because there are social situations like grabbing a beer with a friend who’s in town just for a night, a hell of day at work then going to hh to celebrate, or any other event where a beer/wine/cocktail makes it special.

I don’t want to miss out on those, so no dedicated dry time. Plus I think it’s more sustainable to do this vs doing a dry Jan.

Life too short, never let the party die

Kudos to you! Drinking has been a part of almost every social event I've been to since freshman year of college over a decade ago (doesn't help I was in a fraternity).
I usually give it up for Lent every year, but am doing an extended run this time around to really reset the clock and build better habits.
And yes! Super excited for the title game. Going to Michigan during the Rich Rod & Brady Hoke days really took a hammer to my morale.

I’m a big wine guy and don’t drink often. Usually have a large collection at home but weirdly enough being in this hobby I collect a bit more than I drink. Usually shocks people but I can go a month or two without a single drink and wouldn’t notice. I had enough alcoholics in my life to know it ain’t worth being a slave to it. Thankfully my parents were healthy with the sauce and I guess so am I.

Always encourage others to step away if it consumes any part of your life you don’t want it to.

Doing 6 months sober, month in a half in already. Dr told me to lay off the booze when I told him I average abt 15-25 drinks a night 3-4X a week.

So still been going out but just doing club soda with lime and I feel amazing abt it, bc not only bc 0 stupid shit happens, I can drive home from the bar, wake up feeling fine, but I also don’t spend $600 a weekend on alcohol anymore. And being sober, I honestly can still capture about 80% of the fun I would have drunk.

I originally set out to just take a break from going out for a month or 2 but still have wine at dinner or a beer here and there, but now I kinda just wanna stay sober til like the summer

Okay, yeah I can see why your doctor would want you to cut back at that volume! I typically average 4-5 drinks 3-4x a week and was feeling like that was too much.
$600/week is crazy! Definitely a good move for the liver and the wallet to take an extended sabbatical.

I cut back on drinking during pandemic to avoid gaining weight. Now I'll enjoy a drink when I'm out with the wife or at a networking event, but don't generally imbibe at home.

I will take a couple of days off every month or so just to get my weight or sleep back under control. However, drinking is a great way to connect with people.

As a self-proclaimed HFA, I've done Dry Jan every year for the last 3, it's always a great experience and while I love drinking for all of the reasons, I always find myself wondering if I should just keep it going forever.... and then I have a beer and say hell nah...

Jokes aside, I did implement a no-drinking M-F last year for several months and then just gave up on for some reason and will go back to that strictly post Dry Jan.
I found Reframe (app) to be incredibly easy to use with daily insights on how Alcohol affects you, and really simple strategies to cut the cravings and change your behaviors.

Absolutely, and I’ve felt great when I’ve let my body dry out, only issue is getting there…

I tell myself I’m gonna do it, but then I am reminded later that week that alcohol is a required antidote to keep us sane in the misery rollercoaster that we chose for our profession

Have a vacation in Jan - after that though it's pure sobriety for 3 months for a fitness challenge, then a LIGHT reintroduction.
