I think I had one of those once. Doc gave me some antibiotics and it cleared up.

Just slow drip of emails and with information that someone might pass to a friend or colleague. There’s probably a more technical term for it 🤪

How do you ask? Have an example?

Typically it's after a conference at a dinner. Kinda butter them up. We're a small startup so our CEO puts his sales cap on and asks. I can ask him how he asks and get back to you

It's a combination of asking and having a referral program, because it's nice to also offer a rewards program if you have it. But I'll ask straight up.

When do you ask in the sales cycle? After they have bought/besn up and going for a while?

Actually, I introduce the concept early, as references and marketing support is important to our small company. I mention our referral program toward the end of the sales cycle, and after they're closed, I ask for references when I have a customer I think they'd be a good fit to talk to. There could be many kinds of references - those from earlier in their use of the platform (why did you buy/replace x company/make the decision?) and later (how is it working for you/KPIs you're meeting/value you're getting?). Once they're well established, we ask if they're willing to do a success story or case study with us.

I just realized I'm talking about references rather than referrals.

Same thing applies - I'll ask if there's anybody they know who would be a fit for what we offer, and ask.

Ask.

"Hey, any ideas of others you know who may find this slightly useful?"

People love helping people.

Yeah adding money can make it to serious and a transacation. Phrasing it like this is just someone helping someone else out.

100%. I'll pay finders fees all day that are 4-5 figures depending on the deal.

Ask after every close. During onboarding. During contracted period. At renewal. Never stop asking.

I highly suggest partnering with your CS team. Whenever one of your customers call in with an issue, call them a day later and make sure everything was answered. Then be direct and ask if they know anyone. The law of reciprocity was triggered because your team just helped them solve an issue so take advantage.

I just ask - who do you know who's also looking for X. Sometimes I will give a referral "thank you" like a Starbucks card.

I have built an entire referral network twice. The best way is to make it 2-way

Find companies and partnerships people there and start a conversation. Once you have a common customer, it becomes very easy.

I wait until they’ve found some success as our customer and then follow up to ask for anyone else they know who might benefit.
