Gartner Sr. AE for Global Technology Sales Group Large Enterprise

Hey all,

I'm currently interviewing at Gartner for a senior large ent AE role. I've heard good things and have a few friends who works there; all of them have said it's a great place to work overall. the comp they are offering is also good.

The only kicker for me is I am switching out of SaaS to go down this path. However, the idea of holding 1/2/3/etc major accounts for a well known brand who is a leader in their industry definitely appeals to me and my career path. I'm also burnt out from SaaS and am open to trying a new industry.

Anyone have insight/has worked as an AE/Senior AE on their technology/GTS (or other industry vertical) large enterprise team before?

if so I'd love your opinion/thoughts.

Thanks!

Former manager who was fired for sexual harassment got a job at Gartner... so I've always been skeptical

i left gartner years ago but i spent 6 years there in different roles.Gartner sales is a well oiled machine with quite a prescriptive but tried and tested approach.
Sometimes people coming from "product" sales struggle initially as there are no features to speak of.
You are really selling business outcomes and digging for problems so any hint of "product centric selling" will not work. For some this is easy, for others it a stretch as it's quite intangible as a product.
teams, territories, managers etc vary.. but in general High Tech is one of the core lines of business

Thanks this is helpful. I’ve been selling enterprise SaaS for a while, and a lot of that is focused on business outcomes. I appreciate the context you’ve given.

You know, a recruiter has been blowing up my LinkedIn about applying for that role in my area. What's the interview process like?

Screen, Lead Assessor, then 2, 30 mins meetings with hiring manage and their boss (separately), and a panel. They try to do the 2 30 min meetings and panel in one day. Then turn around a decision within 24 hours.
The process is actually pretty quick it seems. I think I could get mine done in two weeks from how it's going.

I hated my time at Gartner. However, the issue was not completely the company.- Had a horrible first time manager- Was hired with the impression i would be on the HT side. They changed this to EU side because everybody left because of that manager.

Thanks for the feedback. I think regardless of the company if I had a bad manager I'd hate it there as well. Outside of the bad manager, was your experience of the brand itself good?

yeah the brand is good. Both when selling and on your CV.

i also know a few ppl that have worked there and all loved it. but not specifically in that role.

how long have you been in Saas? depending on how long you have been in it, you might have an easy time getting back in if you want.

Going in 7 years in SaaS. Have worked for household brands so I don’t think it’ll be hard to get back into.

Mixed reviews from the team in the comments, but if you're burned out and need a change and this hits your requirements, this could be a good step for you.

I think its more or less positive, the mixed reviews are specific instances around a particular person or manager. But all about Garter itself seems positive. If I had a terrible manager I'd also not want to work there. Just need a break from SaaS... Will see what happens :)

Yeah, it sounds like something you should pursue and decide if you want to do it.
Bad managers can sour you on any company - I had one who had me questioning if I even knew what I was doing; got an awesome manager the next year, and it was night and day. I'd go work for the awesome manager again in a heartbeat; the other one, never in a billion years.
