Going the entrepreneurship route

Using what you know in sales and your sales skills, what's holding you back from starting your own company?

I've always been an entrepreneur at heart and have done many things, but haven't quite find what works for me. I still haven't given up and it's still the ultimate goal for me.

Not much holding me back except for a lack of capital and no business proposal to speak of…

But apart from the money and product concept, i’ll run the shit out of it.

On a similar note, I also feel like the only part holding me back from a career as a pro skateboarder is the fact that I don’t know how to skateboard.

Sales alone does not fully equip you to start and run a business.

True, sales alone isnt enough but its usually the starting point.

I only know how to use AI as a buzzword, don’t really know how to do anything with it.

It’s probably more about risk tolerance of not having a steady paycheck for a few years as you go through building a foundation. Also, there is a ton more to running the show than just selling. A ton more that I really don’t want to deal with.

I’ve done it. 12 years. I hate administrating anything. Wouldn’t do it again.

Oh really? Are you making more income now or when you were in business?

Had some good years on my own. I had an advertising agency. Model was traditional media. So it couldn’t exist today. Earning commission checks with someone else filing the quarterly 941s is just a happier place for me

I have a lot of ideas and I know how to sell. But I would need to team up with someone technical who can envision it... My parents were entrepreneurs and they said that at least with employer you get benefits, pension, healthcare... Entrepreneur you are very much on your own.

Because of taxation reasons I would not do it as a side hustle

I’ve started two companies in the past. One was a software company similar to Airbnb but for sports facilities. For example, you want to rent a basketball court, you could type in the city, amenities, dates etc and see available options, sign rental agreement, pay online etc. Did well and worked with a lot of boys and girls clubs and other facilities but then covid hit. As mentioned before, WAY more to it then the fun stuff. Tracking expenses, taxes, finding employees, legal stuff. It was a huge headache where if I had to go back I’d find these people before even getting started.

Second company was a niche sports training facility which did well and we sold for a profit. But same issues, administration stuff SUCKED, plus staff not showing up resulting in me having to go in on weekends etc.

I may explore in the future but only if I found those people upfront that are good at what I hate

True, managing employees is probably the worse part.

First, if you are a commission sales pro (hopefully full commission), then you are in business for yourself. It is the closest you can come to earning what you are worth with working for someone... REMEMBER: the skills needed as a sales pro are not all that is needed to run a business!

True but sales is usually the starting point of building a business.

Nothing’s holding me back except my own lack of desire to be an entrepreneur. I enjoy time off.

True, you need to have the drive for it. Although dont you think you have more control of your time if you were in business? In the beginning of course would be hell but after that it should be better right?

Of course there’s an element of “it depends”, butI do not think that’s the case the large percentage of the time. I honestly think it will take even more time - who will know the product/solution/company best? Who needs to manage the 1-3-5 year plan? Hire the right people? Be responsive to the market?

My role involves me being an IC, knowing what’s involved to get the job done, bring the right people into the room, then I’m off to the next thing. I am off on weekends, most of my evenings are spent doing what I want, I’m not getting phone calls or emergency texts. I can take a long weekend and ignore my phone, if my deals are in a good place. Basically, my responsibility is limited in a way that I’m pretty free.

I've done a lot of things and most of them, the income wasnt worth the time, although if I stuck with it I probably would have been more successful. Unfortunately I have shiny object syndrome lol.

I think with age, risk-averse-ness (yes I know I am making up words) really goes down with spouses, children, etc. Can be so difficult to do once you get older too

I mean, the fact that you usually need a product to sell and time. Other than that nothing really

You could always start with something existing, then it all comes to marketing at that point.

I used to work in franchising. Salespeople do really well in low-cost home-based systems.
