Has your company ever mandated PTO?

My company is requiring we all take 6 days of PTO this quarter. Last quarter they asked us to all log 5. I have a 2 week vacation coming up in a few months and no desire to take 6 days now. Is this a red flag? Has anyone experienced something like this before?

Do you have "unlimited PTO"? If so, I don't see why you would need to worry too much. But if you have limited PTO it would bother me a lot. Makes me wonder if they are getting ready to clean house and don't want to pay out the unused PTO

That's a good clarifying question. If there's a limit on how much PTO you have I would be very concerned with this mandate - unless you have an obscene amount like 10 weeks banked or something.

Our PTO is limited but accrues. It doesn't not accumulate or roll over at a certain point. I am well below that threshold as I took two weeks back in March and am planning a two week honeymoon in November. My frustration is they are requiring 6 days this quarter. That puts me below what I need for my planned honeymoon. I would accumulate before then but I don't see why this is needed. They said it's to help with OPEX.

That's where I'd be pissed then. If you accrue PTO then it's yours to take when you please.

I've only had a 'use it b x date or lose it' type situation.

What is management's reasoning behind this? And how much PTO do you have?

Vacation days accrue and are a liability on the balance sheet. During Covid, no one was taking days so some companies saw outsized growth of liabilities and asked employees to take the days so that their liability would normalize. Not really a red flag, in my opinion.

I believe the companies that offer unlimited get around the liability accrual. Funny quirk.

It definitely depends on how a company does their PTO plan. Some companies cap the amount you can rollover or accumulate at any point in time, but if they don't (and to your point) then it can be a major liability to have large un-used amounts sitting there. I've been in a situation where we had to strongly encourage people to use up their PTO if the balance was too high.

Have you asked? Would they not be flexible with this considering your plans?

I worked at a big company where PTO was accrued over time. they mandated PTO days periodically to make sure no one was hoarding too much.

Even that would bother me. I could see companies that have "unlimited PTO" policies issuing mandated PTO as a way of being cool and encouraging ppl to take time off.

If I had to earn my PTO I would feel like I should get to use it how and when I wanted. They don't get to tell me how to spend my paycheck that I earn why should they get to tell me how to use my PTO?

I have seen this for non-Sales people (developers, PM, office staff, etc...) but rarely for Sales.

hahah a red flag that your company wants you to take time off???? no.

its not a red flag that they are trying to have their employees avoid burn out.

This happened to me during Covid… how much you lost depended on how much you had accrued. So basically, if you’ve been working your ass off and saving vacation you got screwed.

Needless to say, it summed up my company’s leadership and the next two years got worse and worse. Then I left. CEO ended up leaving 2 months after me and I always knew they were a POS.

Not to say this policy indicates your leadership sucks but this is a company first employees last situation.
