How would you feel?

Sigh...this is gonna be a long one...

Let me just start by saying my work place has always kinda been a hell hole..our sales managers take deals our from under you and they give them to their friends who wok here as well...it doesn't matter even if you have already met with the client they will still take it and they are always in everyone's territories and no respect is given.

WELL, I finally had my moment and talked to the manager about it and he wasn't too happy that I pretty much called them out and said I was over the BS. i knew repercussions So ngl all of us have been struggling this year with our numbers and quota hitting... but I have most the time in the top 3 sales person and sometimes higher...last year I sold almost 600k and my profit margin for the company was only a few thousand less than others who sold 1.2million...My yearly quota was only 480k...this year i am around 93k but also so is a few other.

WELLLL...about 1.5 years ago I switched from a BDR to an AE and they were not wanting me to and tried so hard to keep me as one...but now they came at me the other day and gave me an ultimatum, and said they want me be a BDR again for the owner and sales manager or to leave. I asked where I faltered and they said just the numbers, and I came back with well everyone is just as low as I am so where is the real issue and they had no excuse.

They do also know that I had competitors of ours reaching trying to get me and that they are seeing me all over in their deals and meeting with their large clients. They also lied to me saying that they told everyone else they had 90 days to get their numbers up or they fired. I still asked again, why me and what did I do wrong and they said nothing other than numbers, and that they really liked me, and know I have a ton of talent and that me moving back to their personal BDR would solve the issue of me being upset with them and their friend taking my deals and being in my territory.

I just feel like extremely disrespected, and that all of this came from the fact that I talked to the sales manager about them taking my deals and being in my territory. A few of my coworkers were shocked, cuz they know that I bust my ass and that I do well. Yeah my numbers are a little on the low end but so are theirs, and I have a shyt ton of stuff I am working, and my closing ratio is a lot higher than most everyone here...

Needless to say, it is a pay cut but I didn't wanna walk out without having another job. But am I wrong for feeling disrespected and targeted??

You’re not 100% right or wrong in your analysis.

From what you wrote - you sold 50% of the what other sold, and even when your PM is up there, the optics on the leaderboard say you’re at 50%. So there’s that.

Moving you to BDR might be viewed as a demotion, greasing the squeaky wheel, cutting off your nose to spite your face, or actually solving a real business need. I don’t know, I’m not there. But I get that it’s viewed negatively.

My 2cents - you don’t fit into the company culture. Plain and simple. You need to find somewhere where you fit better. And it’s best if you’re proactive about it rather than it being forced upon you.

If you have no other option, take the deal and start looking for another opportunity. Probably best not to include on your resume that you've been moved back to BDR. Focus on your quota attainment and pipeline.

Worth exploring those competitors who have been barking up your tree?

This would be my suggestion as well. Start reaching out to the competitors who have been reaching out to you. Do not mention the move back to BDR, and don't disparage your current employer. You're reaching out because it's time for a change, you'd love to hear what they have in mind, you're looking for room to grow as a rep - anything positive along those lines. Good luck to you.

ouch that sucks.

The reality, they likely want you out. Take the BDR role, smile and do your best but focus your mental energy on finding a new role at a better organization.

Do some self assessment at the same time. Sounds like a pretty bad culture but we are rarely 100% innocent when tough things happen to us. Try to come up with a couple of takeaways on things you'd do different/better next time. Bring that to your new role at the next company and show them what you're made of!

I really feel like it was the whole thing with me being over the whole deal taking thing, everyone here hates the environment. I've been trying to figure out where I went wrong and have asked the coworkers too we are all pretty close and they all say the same thing. We all think it was the fact that I was done putting up with the BS deal taking stuff.

Fair enough. Either way I'd try to put it behind you and focus on the next chapter. I can tell you that sales leaders don't demote people that they want to stick around the org.

Sounds like you'll be way better off somewhere else anyway!

Then why not fire me? and I asked them that, they said they recognized my talent and wanted me to work under them...also today when I pulled numbers I am over 20k higher than reps been here 4 years, so using my numbers as the excuse doesn't seem logical. I just don't get it!

That's a simple question but the answer can be more complicated than you think. There's also the chance that I'm wrong.

Many managers are not taught how to lead and how to manage their team, especially when it comes to letting people go. For most of us, firing someone is by far the worst part of being a leader. If you're new, untrained or inexperienced you will do just about anything to avoid having to have that conversation.

Again, I'm only going off of what you've provided here and I could be completely wrong. Either way it sounds like a bad fit so why not move on to something better.

A company with a good culture will go a long way, sounds like where you’re at isn’t a good fit. Take the BDR job and keep getting paychecks. And start looking for other opportunities.

Shit situation.

From what you've shared, it sounds like a toxic work culture. Yes, you need to make your numbers. You also can't count on deals being handed to you even though it seems like those "extra gravy" deals are being given to others and not you. Unfortunately, it sounds like your leadership is making your life miserable and treating you unfairly. I might put some feelers out on some other opportunities. Life is too short to be unhappy at work.

Sorry to hear that.
Sh** happens, recommend you to start immediately looking somewhere else, how more toxic that place could be.
Wanna keep stealing your deals and just wanna let you shut the hell up forever!!!
And after you had to talk to them about it now they wanna get you a demotion and keep dragging you down, how dare them!
Consider it as a page of the past and try to get your plans arranged for the next path of your career and wish you much of luck!
