I am Gonging for my life

Long story short: I'm in my new role and currently pedaling as fast as I can with the training wheels on. I've been consulting our ancient texts that BigMeech inscribed into the foundation of the war room.

So far, my team is awesome and we have a full tech stack and I'm experiencing strong support from within. Training is thorough and a big help to me is using our Gong database to watch discovery calls and demos. (Yes, yes, I know).

But besides how much we all hate Gong as a brand, these videos have been incredibly helpful (this is my first time Gonging). I'm just glad our culture isn't ridiculous and we aren't all trying to be linkedin influencers.

I'm drinking from the fire hose and the koolaid is cherry flavored.

Hah thatโ€™s fair. Being the new kid on the block and learning all the inside jokes can be a bit off putting.
Hopefully over time we all learn to like our team mates (for the most part)

Yeah, they aren't signing any deals - what do I need them for? I just look for the one coworker with really dark humor that isn't allowed anywhere near HR for everyone's sanity. From them I learn what meetings I can skip, where to park so you can leave early on office days, etc. Basically I just need the kid on the back of the bus to show me the way.

The biggest struggle for me is always โ€œwhyโ€. Why should anyone give a shit about my product? Once I get to the point where I can explain it to my mostly deaf grandma in a way she understands, I am ready.

Glad I could help, that onboarding journal was more intensive than I originally planned haha

I wish I had more conversations early on with my peers about their takes on how to do the job. Listening to calls on Gong is great for observation, but understanding those calls comes from conversation.

Iโ€™d make an effort to have conversations with your team members.

Great take! Thatโ€™s something I am being intentional about. Most of us are remote so Iโ€™m booking meetings with my fellow reps to ask how they actually go about their processes. Very true!

Definitely learning a new product + industry for me. I hate feeling like a fool or that I don't know something on a demo. It is necessary to be humbled sometimes though.

So if my goal should be showing prospects that you know their space, know their struggles (current and future), and that you can navigate that with/for them...definitely can take a while to get there. That's probably why I'm a little hesitant to change now.

Gong has its place, I just take issue with their bro-fanboi culture and them trying to backward engineer ALL sales.ย  Its not a science, its an art.

Biggest struggle for me is often internal resources.ย  Once I get going, I like to bring in other people to assist - product experts, executives, etc.ย  Not everyone is a team player or understands sales/selling( even though they pretend they do).

The biggest struggle for me in my current role was learning the product and industry combined with the sales process and the companies approach to sales. There are no sales enablement tools, no Outreach, Sales Navigator, ZoomInfo was just purchased at the end of last year. SDRs were run by marketing, brought over to sales and then they hired someone from marketing to manage them and I think there's 4 SDRs to handle 16 AEs. So definitely a combination of product knowledge but also our busted ass process.

Gosh - sounds like an absolute pain!
Curious to hear your thoughts on which sales enablement tools would help to ramp up faster? The type with learning courses or more productivity-related.

in my new gig that I am in, the hardest part is the ability to review past calls since no one records anything. so i have to wait for a demo or discovery call to be scheduled before I can review how we handle those situations.ย

Working remotely made training and learning a new industry/product a little more difficult for me. Wasnโ€™t as easy to get questions answered as it wouldโ€™ve been in person

I get that. For me I just have to be diligent to keep my list of questions to ask them when I am connected with someone on a zoom.

Training & learning tools can be good (great way to consume content), but it shouldn't be used alone. I found that buddy programs, structured coaching sessions, and shadowing in the first 2-3 months can be 100x better than what a Powerpoint can teach you!

my biggest obstacle in a new role is always all the training and nonsense I have to do before being able to actually start. I'm the kind of person that learns from doing. All the videos you have to watch, scripts you have to read, HR people you have to jerk off for "inclusion, and best practices, and whatever other buzz word is trending right now", all goes in one ear and out the other and I lose it all before I even start. Let me start actually pitching, talking to customers, networking with coworkers, shadowing senior reps, and that's where I'm going to actually learn and retain information.ย
