I need to rant about my boss.....AGAIN

sooo if you read the post i linked here, you will get a sense on how this deal started.

we are moving FAST.

The DM seems ready for next steps.

I talked with my boss on monday and we agreed, that we would do a combo meeting to talk key integration capabilities, AND price. one call.

Before i could reach out to her, she emails me and my boss asking for the exact meeting we were going to suggest.

PERFECT!

my boss quickly texts me "dont respond to ____ until we chat".

he was in meetings and couldnt talk. no worries I have a 1 on 1 tomorrow.

Im on my way picking up dinner for the fam and I get a notification....

HE emails her back.

Suggests that we set up 1 call to talk about how big they are.

Then ANOTHER call to talk integrations and present an SOW.

  1. im PISSED that he would respond without talking to me like he wanted to (shows he does not respect me or trust me IMO)
  2. i dont agree with his approach. its not a MASSIVE problem but this deal is huge and any hiccups where we create MORE steps im NOT ok with.
  3. The plan we agreed upon shows that we have a process, and have been here before and know what we are doing. his approach makes it sound like we are just winging it.

i ask the WR again.....Im allowed to be PISSED about this right????

Document it for your records to quietly build a case. Calmly discuss why this bothers you in your 1 on 1.

Damn, F*** that person. This person for sure has a sports car or something super over the top flashy to compensate for their shortcomings.

Sorry you are dealing with this still and it sounds like it is about time to tell them to STFU.

Your manager needs to let you sell. Even if he's ghostwriting emails or giving you specific directions, you're the face of your company and the process. I'd be mad too.

Your boss sounds like a dumbass. I would be equally pissed. Like itโ€™s my deal, donโ€™t fuck around with it!

I wonโ€™t be pissed unless he had chatted before shooting that email. I always discuss with my boos first and the we come to a conclusion. Trust and transparency is very much needed. It you who will lose something here not the boss. I would definitely discuss this with him but in the right tone ๐Ÿ˜…

Yes you should be pissed. That's someone that doesn't trust you to do the job you were hired to do.

i think this is the part that pisses me off the most. like, what do you want me to actually do if you wont let me run the sales process. i cant make your life easier if you are always butting in and taking over.

Seems like he wants to be responsible for his entire teams quota. Let him sell and hit your number for you. I hate management like this

its a really really weird spot to be in. Never been in it before.

im being paid REALLY well. but im handcuffed by my boss so I cant actually do my job.

I can sit back and just let him do his thing.

If he was doing a good job that would be one thing. but I just dont like how he runs things and I think it puts us at risk which I am 100% not ok with.

I donโ€™t usually jump straight to โ€œmisogyny!โ€ Often but Iโ€™m getting vibes here. Based off your experiences over the past several weeks Iโ€™m thinking your boss thinks he knows better than you. And I wonder if he would treat your male counterparts the same way? Sure, he could be a straight up asshat who thinks he knows better than EVERYONE but something just feels off here. Im getting the feeling he thinks youโ€™re not being โ€œaggressiveโ€ enough. I think itโ€™s time to call him out. Although, Iโ€™ve never been one to shy away from confrontation.

TL;DR itโ€™s time to put a stop to this bullshit. Youโ€™re there for a reason- you know what youโ€™re doing. His continual undermining of your strategy is unacceptable.

so one clarification is that I am male haha. the DM for the account is a female.

but i think he 100% thinks he knows better than me. which is not the case, but even if he DID, he is not letting me do my job which is a massive problem for me.

How'd the 1:1 go? I assume this was the main topic. I would at least be asking all the points you made, just phrased differently

so the 1:1 was uneventful but eye opening at the same time. He started off trying to explain why everything happened the way it did. his explanation did not make sense to me.

i decided in that moment that I was not going to push it anymore. just didnt feel like trying to convince him that I need to be kept in mind when its clear what his though process is. he is not doing it on purpose but he does not look at me as a valuable member of the team that can get shit done. im just someone to help get deals through procurement really.

I did press him on the conversations he had done with the prospect that lead to this whole situation. It was very clear that he did a TERRIBLE job doing basic discovery on the topic being discussed. Which is not the first time this has happened.

REALLY annoying. but this massive deal is moving forward and we got a verbal. so in his mind, all is good.

Its always bittersweet when something like this happens but win the deal. **Knocking on wood as I typed it**

Since this justifies the actions of the manager which may cause it to happen again

Document his actions on your personal laptop, tablet, phone, etc. At the very least it'll help you recall his actions for future discussions. Yes, you have the right to be pissed, but getting through his wall of arrogance may be tough.
