Just got PIP'd (45 days and im gone)

Hey Savages, after 5 years last 2 not being so great for me from health perspective and closed business-wise. I was just told im getting put on PIP by HR and got 45 days to hit my number or im gone. Really more like 39 days. Ive had 4 managers last 3 years, majority of my accounts have changed every year so i have to start over, and dont even have the technology platform we need to sell majority of our portfolio. My first manager said this to me after taking accounts and 2 mil in pipeline away from me 2 years ago "this territory hasnt been worked and needs a lot of hard work". Essentially giving me the scraps and taking the good stuff and spreading it to his boys as they where from the merging company.

That first year i spent so much time and effort rebuilding relationships with accounts and now finally seeing the fruits of my labor.

I have had $800k - $2M in deals and pipeline i created taken away from me over the last 3 years and given to someone else on my team because i wasnt part of the club.

I have a really good chance to hit my number this year or even BLOW it out. Got multi million $$$ deal longshot but could close this qtr. Nothing else though. Rest of my year is very strong even w/o the big dawg deal with almost +$700k in guaranteed closed business in q3/q4 and more was to come.

Seems highly unlikely, i can save myself from this situation though. I was truly excited for this year as I finally had a chance to do big things.

Guess, I am just looking for advice and how to go about this situation. I have been laid off here before but it was when I was a BDR and it was during COVID. Times are much different but job market seems just as bad if not even worse. Im told I will have the "official call" in the next 2 days

I started following Dan Goodman, and he always calls them a 'Paid Interview Period'

Once you're on a PIP you know they're going to push you out, no matter what. Especially when it's not attainable.

Are you being measured on things you're not usually measured against?

Either way, you need to start looking ASAP, and document whatever you can and need to so you can prove the successes you have. Also think about how you're going to tell the story - it's pretty clear why you'd want to leave based on what they've been putting you through and instability.

Don't forget to sabotage the deals in your pipe for the org pushing you out on the way while making sure your contacts know where you end up and can continue to deal with a pro. Always time for pettiness especially when they've been taking out your legs from under you for a few years by the sound of it.

Agreed, OP based on your description: your situation is all about politics and it is clear they want to push you out.
Document what you have done and brush up the resume with it. Get out on your own terms to an organization that will actually appreciate what you offer. Five years is a solid amount of time anywhere.

Hope all turns out well for you. In summary: stay touch with those contacts, document positive shoutouts (internal and customers), then pipeline attainment on sfdc and any reports that reflect the best of your performance.

Keep us posted! PIPs and shitty employers aren’t unique but your story is from most.

Pretty hard to overcome a PIP, especially with the circumstances you describe. I would take advantage of the 45 days and start doing a paid job search.

They are saying to not bother trying to beat the PIP at all. Look at the next 45 days as a window in which you are being paid to look for another job.

I don't have a lot of advice that is better than what everyone else has said, but I wanted to comment and say it sounds like you got a raw deal, and I am sorry. It sucks, but take action and find something else.

Work, do whats needed to keep people happy as possible but dont fret spending time sprucing your resume, applying, etc. If your job allows you to work remote, super easy to do interviews. If not, you can always use some PTO to meet where/when needed.

If you need help, it may be worth working with Resume services that can help you take your explanation of experience and apply it to pen and paper the way recruiters would take notice.

I think on LI there is a gal by the name of Robyn Story, she is pretty funny and down to earth in what she posts.... Could be worth looking at.

I agree to invest in a resume service at this juncture. I've been told this person is excellent. I think she charges about $500.

Like others said. Start looking. It’s obvious they want you out. If smart say something to them about medical issues and being pushed out while having medical troubles and feel they are unfairly trashing you. Taking accounts and that you have not been given a chance to succeed. Like others said. Document all this. Recording the phone call. And talk to Dan about all this mess.

I think giving two weeks can be the move in some cases unless you're looking to collect unemployment makes it easier for the next job so you don't have to say you were laid off

Naw I’m gonna milk it for the $ I still could close some business and make some money on the way out. And may need to collect unemployment as I go through finding another job depending on how it goes these next 45 days. Prefer to do that than try to get one while not working. We are remote so isn’t a big issue.

I have been the recipient of two kinds of PIPs. One, the doable kind meant to get a strong performer back on track that’s maybe slacked off, burnout, etc. Still not easy, but I dug myself out of it and regained the faith and confidence of my superiors, and myself.

The second kind, which sadly seems you are in, and I’ve been through as well, is the get-rid-of-you type. It sucks Indeed to be in this position, and I’m so sorry. It seems like a very toxic and shifting leadership situation at your company. My advice is what others have said and use this as a paid interview period (PIP.) Also document all that you can, get your narrative down for your interviews, firm up any alliances you have at your current workplace for references or leads, and try to keep your chin up as you move onward and upward.

You’ve at least had a respectable tenure and track record at your company. It’s not the end of the world. Far from it.

Best of luck, and keep fighting the good fight!

Been where you are. The best thing to do is play the game for now, assume no matter what it's inevitable. Obviously do your best to pull in what you can, but there's usually more behind the PIP that has nothing to do with you (i.e. still hungover from overhiring and feeling the economic pinch now more than ever). As hard as it is (and I know it's hard) try to let go of what they're taking from you, it's not going to help you move on. Do get your story/narrative straight for your pitch to new employers and try to not sound bitter. Practice it outloud and in low stakes environments (i.e. low lever recruiters for jobs that aren't too exciting). Try to get allies before you go, who can help you, be a reference for you, refer you, speak first hand to your past successes. Leverage the empathy and sympathy to help you (especially in the early days when it's fresh for them). It sucks in the short term, but ultimately these crappy experiences have led me to better jobs, so it's often a blessing in disguise.

Any PIP in a role where your sales cycle is long, that is 30-45 days is simply them trying to CYA. Sorry you've had to deal with this and set your table for someone else to eat. Go be appreciated!

Do you work remotely or at the office? Would you quit your job if you had to go to the office full time? I’d quit immediately. Well as soon as I found another job 😂. Currently, I’m working from home I go to the office once in a while. I can work from any country. I went to the beach for 3 weeks and just took two days off to recover from a festival.
