Landed 1st Saas sales role. Should I sign a noncompete?

I’m 8 years into consumer-direct call center roles. I’ve been applying for AE/AM positions and not gotten any traction. I finally got a job offer on a BDR position (HCM vertical) where they acknowledged in the interview that I’m slightly over-qualified and would push me to AM in 6 months.

In the interview, manager mentioned she acknowledges the BDR team’s role as a feeder team, that “we will help you succeed at the AE level whether it’s with us or somewhere else in the industry”.

In the offer contract there is a 1 year non-disclosure and non-compete. I’m looking at it as a necessary evil to beginning my path to earning $120k+ in the next 2 years. Would you take the position or try to find another role?

Sign non-complete for first Saas role?

Firstly, congrats on the offer!

I feel like noncompetes are pretty standard, not sure how often they are enforced. I'd take the role no doubt

So I have signed non-competes, but people will leave for competitors all the time. As long as you dont download all crm and pricing info then leave for a competitor I am sure you are ok

And most companies can track everything you do on your computer now. So they will know.

Exactly, depending on jurisdiction it might already be unenforceable.

Non-competes are tenuous at best. Very hard to actually enforce. NDAs are easily enforced though, if they can prove anything. Usually they send over a lawyer letter and rattle the saber a bit.
Sign it. You’ll be fine.

Congratulations on the offer. Non-competes are generally unenforceable and in fact not legal in my state anyway. I wouldn't consider it an issue.

Congrats on the new role!

NCA/NDAs are often a little stuffed with fugazzi. My last role was at a startup, and they made me sign an NDA. My close friend is a lawyer, and read through it saying barely any of the terms could hold in court.

Sign away. But also have it reviewed, if you can.

Sign and obey.
My golden rule: you want others to adhere to negotiated agreements. So start by doing so as well.

I wouldn't worry about it unless you have access to the company's IP.

Non competes are basically wasted docusigns. Depending on where you live they’re unenforceable most times

Sign it and forget about it whenever a competitor hits you up with a higher comp!

It’s pretty standard as others have noted. The caveat? Get the conditions of promotion in 6mo in writing and confirm that trajectory is not only possible but likely with others in the org already.

At my last place, that trajectory was oversold for some. As soon as it was mentioned, everyone warned him it was not possible

What state do you live in? In my state, non-competes basically mean nothing.

Not worth the headache to go after someone for damages you can’t even prove. I’d say just don’t steal your current customer list and solicit for your first year after you leave.

I’d sign it and not worry.

What’s the best companies to reach out to for SDR / BDR roles for a career changer looking for solid base comp and decent OTE (financial advisor made 120k last year 3 years hit quota every year cold calling running the sales process so I think I have relevant AE skills but I get taking a step down since I have no SAAS sales skills. (However I have 1.5 years of IT recruiting experience where I also crushed quota and learned a bit about IT broadly) Thanks
