Logistics...

I know this is a sales centric site but honestly I just don't understand how these major Logistics companies actually think they way they ship packages makes sense.


I bid on an item in an auction and won. Made my payment and was notified of the shipment. The auction house is in Connecticut and I am in Massachusetts (basically 2.5 hours away).


The item is shipped from Danbury CT then to Newark NJ then to Memphis TN, then to East Boston MA then to a local distribution facility near me to be out for delivery. Granted this all takes place within 2 days but the package was only 2.5 hours away to begin with...

If it was FedEx isn't their major hub in the south?

Both UPS and Fedex hubs are in Tennessee. UPS is I believe in Memphis and Fedex is Nashville but they may both be in Memphis.

I loathe the shipping mafia because I deal with them every single second of my day and thankfully have a direct line to our preferred customer service lines.

UPS is Louisville

DHL is Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky

Amazon is Cincy too

If they put it on a truck 2 hours away you'd expect it in over a week.

That's just insane. It is amazing how quickly packages can get across the globe but even in the video they discuss the west coast and shipping from phoenix to Oakland to serve other cities. This was to be more efficient. The route my package took seems to fly in the face of this practice.

Gotta think of these volume of scale. Where you are might not be enough to fill a truck to X. So it's goes get consolidated with two or three more cities to make it worth the last mile distribution.

In shipping the first and last mile and the most expensive - ask the middle mile flying/trucking is dirt cheap.

It is the shipping mafia, and we have to deal with it right this moment. Currently there are only truly 2 major carriers out there (I don't count USPS as a major carrier) but I would expect in the next 2-3 years to see the 3rd major carrier for small package logistics (Amazon) to be fully operational in every state and internationally.

Best shipping story I have was when I ordered a gift (early, thank goodness) and was following its progress on the shipping tracker. And one day the status: train derailment, shipment delayed.

It was only a week late in arriving, but that was a new one on me.

logistics....the worst ever. especially since covid.

arent there jobs that you are pretty much selling logistics services or something? I think companies like TQL thats what your doing? I remember interviewing in college and they told me I would have to be on call all the time incase a shipment got delayed and i couldnt think of a worse job haha
