New SDR Rant

Rant incoming.

I’m 1 month into an HCM BDR role after 7 years B2C closing roles. I’m booking appointments but I miss the income and thrill of sales. I’ve even received feedback from my team to “stop selling once they agree to the appointment. Don’t give them any good information, just get their contact info.” God forbid, I get the prospect excited about the disco and build some CSV to help them understand why they’d be a fool to pass up 15 minutes with my field rep. WHOOPS.

This is by far the hardest and most frustrating job I’ve ever had. And the lowest paying. I was told in 6 months (or less) if I perform well, I’ll see an offer to transition to SMB AE. Most of our AEs and AMs are not hitting quota and probably make around 90-115k /yr total. I got into it with this expectation and I’m mostly ranting here, but I feel like my time (and wallet) are wasting away not being in a closing role. Should I do Bravado Flex? Start job-shopping again after 1 month on the floor? Take it on the chin and learn on my way up? FWIW I believe in the product and the company culture is solid.

Take it easy, one month is too soon to start getting anxious. B2B has a bit of a slower pace than B2C.

I made this change 3 years back and I know how you feel, bit you`re here for the right reasons - more earning potential and better future roles, so keep things in perspective.

Were you making more in B2C role?

B2B from B2C is a pretty big jump, even into SMB. Are you comfortable with the differences, or do you feel that you might want to return to B2C?

What I'm trying to understand is why you changed markets in the first place, and if there's an end goal in mind. If you were doing well, why did you make the switch?

The relaxed culture of B2B is appealing and the max earning potential in B2C is about 90k unless there's another mortgage boom. I'm looking at midmarket AE roles OTE 150ish as the goal (want to be in this type of role for the majority of my career)

If you find the culture in B2B relaxed, you might be better suited for the sales role than you even think you are. I'd tell you to slow down and get tolerant. If management is good, they'll move you.

After consumer direct mortgage and insurance, this culture is a breeze 😂

I've hired people from both worlds. They always have the best work ethic and thickest skin. You've got an advantage you may not have even known you had. Supports the "stay put" advise from before. All things equal, you'll move faster than most.

I'm going to advise you to stay the course, if your end goal is to work up to >90K, because that is absolutely possible. You're just early in your new vertical.

Out of curiosity, if you were making more in B2C, why did you move?

It’s legit feedback. You’re doing someone else’s job and most people Don’t like that.

Why did you take an SDR job after being in direct sales for 7 years? You may not be a fit there

Good luck in it but you may want to oates to the “stay in your lane” feedback.

You sound overqualified for the role...

Outside of good product and culture...why exactly did you leave the previous gig?

For the long game. Getting back into a closing role with over 6 figure earning potential. That mortgage money came hard and left fast lol

I think you might need to be a little patient, you are in a new industry and dont know everything yet. Are you even done with training yet?
