Opportunity STATE

Hi Fellow Warriors,

Canadian here! I've been offered an opportunity to build out a region in the USA for my company, on the track to Director-->VP. I basically have free reign of where I want to go, excluding Houston because it's already been developed.

I work for an IT & Engineering Recruitment firm but it can really be any kind of specialized recruitment, Construction, Health & Insurance, etc. I know we hate recruiters (or you all do) but I'm selling the services and people like recruiters when they get a job FACT!

My previous expertise has laid within Major Projects such as Pipeline, LNG Facilities as well as Major Energy and IT within the Cannabis Sector, but I'm open to anything. Wherever there is growth there is hiring- My question to you all is:

Where do you see the most opportunity over the next 5 years in the country (USA) and why? If you had to choose a state to live for the next 5 years what would it be and why?

Thanks in advance

Denver and Austin are big for tech and Denver is great for engineering (UC Boulder is right there along with Colorado School of Mines). Good amount of competition in both for staffing (I used to be in staffing as well) in both places, but Covid thankfully wiped out a lot of the bad recruiting firms. Strangely enough Boise, ID and Bentonville, AR are booming in tech as well.

I second this. Used to work for one of the big-name IT recruitment firms (awful company) - Denver, Austin, and the Bay were our west coast hub's bread and butter.

I have a feeling you're from Alberta... Denver is similar to Calgary. It's about an hour drive to the mountains. Generally flat. High altitude.

No joke. I'm in TX a lot... Austin is very cool/hip/progressive.

Brownsville/South Padre area... You'll thank me.

South Padre/Brownsville is a good area to vacation, not great to staff up a sales/recruiting team. The talent you are looking for won't be in this area. If you are looking to build up a team, go to the larger areas that are tech/talent hubs. makes recruiting much easier. nothing worse than having openings and not being able to fill them or having to make judgement calls whether a candidate is good enough or not.

Unless you were saying Brownsville/South Padre just for vacation purposes and then disregard my comment haha

The tech talent/aerospace engineering talent pouring into the area. Is perfect timing to be first entrant advantage. When the rest come in 3+ years. You got this.

Yeah. Just outside of Brownsville Papa Elon has the municipal area on lock. Renaming it to Starbase, TX

Wife and I are considering a complete relocation to TX but i second some of the notes here that ID is sneaky good

I would personally avoid Austin from a crime perspective and its a little more hipster than your DFW area both are great though

Where in canada are you?

I'm in Calgary, AB currently. Texas is similar in industry - but I'm open to anything and everything. Thanks for your reply!

It's going to be somewhere in the middle of the country. Austin and Denver already are insane growth markets. I envision we'll see more in other mid-size cities

I live in Boston so I'm biased, but I love it here and think it will be a booming place in the next 5 years. So many tech companies and college students around here!

Can't go wrong w/ Denver or Austin as stated by others

If you're looking to buy property the market is insane in Denver right now so good luck finding something. (although can't imagine it's much better in Austin or DFW area)

Your previous experiences will definitely fit well within how Denver is growing and obviously between TX and CO, CO has more growth (pun) within the Cannabis Sector

I work in IT so I would say I have been recruited for many Denver, Austin, Dallas, NYC and the Bay Area.

I’m born and raised in Louisiana and an oilfield roughneck. Moved to Phoenix 14 years ago and have been working on the phones since. Phoenix to me is the land of opportunity if you’re willing to get out of your comfort zones and try something new.
Originally attempted to get welding or operating jobs but couldn’t compete with the “cheap labor”. Best thing that ever happened to me. Been a cold-calling commission freak ever since.
