Question for all the SaaS 8 plus year vets

***edited below***So I have worked in hospitality tech the past 8 years, then recently went back to an online travel sales hunter role. I had been there previously 15 years ago and did so well I was able to branch out into my first VP job and climb. BUTTTTT they have 50 plus of us on a team, no roadmaps, no verticals-it's basically the wild west. It has become so bad that they want 40 plus calls a day targeting C suite-but yet no one has territories, or verticals so people put in a . or wrong number to build a new lead in SF. Then comes to commission-that is IF they can keep the accounts you bring in.

Am I being to picky? 50 plus on a sales team with no guidelines-and turn over rate is horrible-someone that had been here 10 plus years said only 15% of the people make their yearly goal. Sales cycles are NOT quick-right now I'm in the top 10-but just lost 2 accounts due to poor service. I'm used to a base of 120k plus comm-but feel it's so cut throat I'm not sure where to even go right now?

People say medical SaaS-but you need the background or degree. Help me war room I'm struggling-last week the ambulance came to get me as I thought I was having a full on heart attack.

Example asked for an account to be turned over that someone has been "calling" leaving voicemails and emails for over two years....no qualification done. She tried to say if she didn't get anywhere in 60 days she would turn it over. I then sent it on to our boss who called her and then I got a nasty email from her-that if I didn't get anywhere in 60 days she will grab it back. She has over 7k "accounts/leads" and this is common...lvm email.....and they will refuse to turn over.

The environment might result in you taking another trip on that ambulance.

Take your time and find the right role so that you don't have to do this again.

Thank you-right now I'm the only income coming in. I agree-besides that I started on ulcer medicine. I just have never experienced any company with this large of a sales team with no boundaries-we don't have inbound leads..it's all on us to find, kill and deal.

Do you have any kind of rules of engagement in place?

Yes- as in you have to ask the person that "owns" the account for them to turn it over. There is NO ONE sweeping SF-so there are thousands of records assigned but they just sit there on rotation. We have to find our own leads-then you ask people-and they make up bs excuses-oh I have it as a to call (task) next month. It's almost impossible to find accounts that are NOT in SF.

This sounds like an absolute shit show. Definitely look at what's out there. At the very least, you've got an employer right now. It might not be ideal, but it takes the pressure off in this job market.

Stick with it for now, but keep looking on the down low for another position. As stated by @punishedlad, you've got an employer and although it sounds like a zoo, make the best of it, but don't let it make you sick. It's just not worth it. It makes growing older harder than it already is, and it's coming fast.

I think I need to get my resume redone...I'm not getting any bites at all. And I have the stats to prove it. I've heard medical SaaS is the way to go..but I just don't know.

Sounds terrible. That’s a massive sales team to be so loose. Start looking and don’t quit looking until you get a better offer. It will come.

If that last part is for real, don’t brush it off. Start talking to a professional, it will help! I know several that have been there before.

50+ on a sales team is supposed to mean the 1 old guy who’s got a big book and deep relationships. Otherwise it’s completely insane without a territory map.

You have to find a way to manage the stress. 1st step for me would be to acknowledge that which you cannot control. Whatever caused that feeding frenzy of a work environment wasn’t your doing. You can’t fix it.

Count your money. Figure out how far you can stretch. Depart. Ain’t no job worth that.

That sounds nuts. Fortunately, I’ve never heard of a company being run this way, which means your next role is unlikely to be anything like this. You could even job hunt in the same category, just not this company.

Stay well. The next role is bound to be better.

Thanks everyone...right now I'm sitting at over 133% of my yearly goal. To think that they hold commissions (which is barely anything anyway) if you aren't at 50% is wild. Considering hardly anyone is making their numbers. I've lost two accounts in 60 days-so my percent will go down. All service issues (holding for 48 minutes) unable to have our platform up and live enough to have bookings made. I've been a VP but my industry has had a ton of layoffs so my tenure looks short. I don't know how to turn it around-but not used to being on the naughty list for no reason. Every call is caught and when I came back from the ER I was told to put in sick time to cover it. I only took 4 hours=I didn't want to take any more than that. That wasn't even rewarded.

That sounds rough… I recently pivoted from business software (CRM, etc) into AI/computer vision. The niche we are in is blowing up, new market that didn’t exist a few years ago.

Definitely a bit of a risk because it’s such a new space but the upside is huge if you find the right ship. Since it’s a newer market I see companies hiring people more for culture, sales complexity and tenure over “have sold SaaS/XYZ before”

yeah like a leadership problem to me. I once worked at a company like this, if you had touch on an account within 30 days it was yours, regardless of segment. The result was reps leaving accounts in drip cadences with not real value incase an inbound ever came in. You had SMB reps with "ownership" across a large number of high value Ent accounts. IT was a mess and I got outta there

What’s the best companies to reach out to for SDR / BDR roles for a career changer looking for solid base comp and decent OTE (financial advisor made 120k last year 3 years hit quota every year cold calling running the sales process so I think I have relevant AE skills but I get taking a step down since I have no SAAS sales skills. (However I have 1.5 years of IT recruiting experience where I also crushed quota and learned a bit about IT broadly) Thanks
