Resume formats you actually like

Does anyone have a resume format that they like that works? I need to redo mine, I don't think it's ATS friendly enough and I can't find one I really like so what is everyone else doing?

This is what I've defaulted to. I use the middle one under executive/management on top row.

what do you mean "that works"?

one thing that i think doesnt work, is when ppl list "skills" that are super basic and generic.

Ive always thought its better to have your resume focused on what you have done and accomplished.

saying you are "proficient in Microsoft", and have "great time management" mean nothing.

By works I mean ATS systems are effectively and accurately pulling the information on it. I agree with skills but from what I have seen it make a difference with ATS. I’m thinking I’ll end up doing two versions. One to submit through systems and another to load as an attachment with cover letter or for sending directly.

I "borrowed" a template from a colleague and repurposed it. It was in Adobe Illustrator which I converted to PDF. It looked great, but I don't look forward to updating it ever again.

I am seriously questioning the need for resumes if all the same info is on LI. But so it goes.

I like resumes in the situation of an in person interview, less prone to distraction and printed LinkedIn pages suck. I also kee my LI profile more customer focused where my resume is more metric focused. Although as I am typing this I am wondering why I ever followed that advice. I’m going to have to think on that for a second.

That makes sense. I don't like it when a resume is a requirement just meant to satisfy a checkbox.

Granted, a nice document can consolidate the information and present it in a different light, and I do like it as a handout/tangible item during in person.

The template I used had a very nice left sidebar that was eyecatching without being overwhelming. Contact info and a snippet of personality went there, and the bullet points of the career were in the body, or the center and right part of the page. The trick was in personal bootstrapping into using the unfamiliar Adobe Illustrator to modify the template, which took a bit longer than using a more familiar format would have been.

I have never really thought about using Illustrator to do one. Guess I'm just old! Might try that soon but that will take a lot longer than I want to spend right now.

I wouldn't bother, tbh. It was just a really nice, easy on the eyes format that would have been super had it been a template in something I was more familiar with. I just really liked its appearance and couldn't find anything similar online.

I'm with you on the need for resumes when we have LI. Also why am I uploading my resume then having to manually type all that shit in?

your basic reverse chronological is the standard, especially for online submittal.

HOWEVER....

if you want to do something fancy to take to an interview or send directly to a hiring manager than the sky's the limit.

The big thing is that whatever you want them to see needs to be up front and center.
