Tips for building good client relationships when selling:

I know some of this stuff is common sense but I'm curious to get all of your thoughts and what you would add to this list...

1.)   Use the client’s name and use it often.

2.)   When a client asks you a price question give them a price answer.

3.)   Talk through your company’s/product/services’ shortcomings

a.     This lowers expectations and solidifies you as “trustworthy”

4.)   Go out of your way to represent the client, especially when they are dealing with other members of your company, always make the client feel that you are on their side, even if you must open a backchannel to do so.

5.)   Be prepared to set next steps and follow-up regularly (I like at least quarterly)

a.     Don’t be afraid to ASK THEM, “What would you like to see for next steps?”

6.)   Show more interest in THEIR processes, projects, etc. and show less interest in closing a “sale”

7.)   Ask them directly for referrals, and make sure to ask them permission to name drop.

a.     It is also perfectly okay to ask them to literally introduce you.

b.     This one is assuming you have actually delivered for them successfully.

8.)   Take good CRM notes and use them to summarize the discussion for your next meeting.

a.     This is SO EASY to do, and almost no one actually does it, but I can assure you that it not only impresses clients, but it refreshes their memory too.

9.)   If you feel like you’re reaching out too much you probably are. If you’re being ghosted they are probably just busy, give them a few weeks, even a few months, then follow back up.

#1 feels like a used car sales tactic, I hate it when someone says my name over and over in a sales conversation. Maybe a personal pet-peeve, but I don't practice it for the same reason.

Yup. Use it once in conversation and once when we are saying goodbye. More than that makes me irrationally pissy 🤷‍♀️

Yeah, good call on this, you can DEFINITELY overdo this and sound like a used car salesman for sure...

That's a very good list @TheRealPezDog ! Here's my adds, hope they make sense:

10. Don't walk into them without knowing who they are, their business, competitors and how the industry is doing. Stuff like that you can just google and it doesn't take long!

11. Engage with your support team to provide customers with a great overall experience. I.e.: don't let marketing just drop emails on them all month long but rather come up with a strategy, maybe some ABM.

Loved what you said about advocating for them. Number 4 and 9 in your list are 100% true.

Great list. Only disagreement for me at least is using their name a lot. I personally don't do this because it doesn't really fit my personality and I feel like Toby talking to Andy when they think he's having a mental breakdown. If it fits your personality go for it, but I always get a little put off when I hear my name 20 times in a 30 minute conversation.

Ultimately you just have to let your personality shine, as cheesy as that sounds. I would always put on this weird business persona when i first got into a closing role and it seemed so fake looking back at it, which is probably why I wasn't closing much. Now I don't hide shit and am just myself. I'm very upfront about pretty much everything, being as honest as possible just like I would be talking to a friend, and it ends up building credibility on top of rapport.

Your list hits on a lot of the process part which is key as well, but in all that I think who you are can make a big difference too.

Rant over thanks for reading

Great rant, I agree wholeheartedly on just being yourself over using a fake persona, it IS like talking to a friend and buyer's appreciate it (or so that's the feeling they all give me)
