Ways to improve SDR programs

Here's my take:

  • Don’t forget to celebrate your losses together as a team. We learn from failure, so any fail is an opportunity for the team to put their heads together to figure out an improvement.

  • During your SDR training sessions, make space to focus on upskilling for their next role. The opportunity to move up is a natural self-motivator and will help your SDR’s learn about which metrics you’re tracking early on.

Potential unpopular opinion: SDR managers need to have been a successful AE in the past. To know what a shit meeting looks like and to put a stop to them.

I agree with this. Also, SDRs also need to be in house, and have the opportunity to become an AE (if they want.) SDRs with no upwards trajectory don't care about giving AEs shit appointments as long as they get to collect their reward. If they have becoming an AE in their mind, they'll work to make sure they're putting through quality as that's what they would want to receive.

Call me what you want, just sign the damn contract
This is a great point. The career path is also limiting for somebody who has been a SDR manager but never carried the bag. The SDR Manager role can also be great management training for younger reps with a future in management.

SDR’s are so underutilized at most companies from what I’ve seen, and not just from the company itself but by AE’s. SDR’s should be buddied up with a senior sales rep to learn how to work with reps and also hear objections that come up frequently. As a sales rep I’ve learned that first thing to do is get a list together for an sdr to call through for you and book those meetings. SDR’s can be a huge help if people would take the time.

I agree for the most part, but as a senior ae I get peeved when I'm expected to train my SDR in the basics e.g. CRM, ICP, competitive positioning. I feel a lot of SDRs get the most basic training then are thrown to the wolves.
