What's up with VPs/HoS that didn't ever get into Ops/Marketing/Analytics slapping RevOps in their title?

It takes a lot of different experience to make a capable CRO and after being on many consulting gigs it's apparent when there hasn't been enough cross disciplinary exposure with one.

Marketing CROs have a weak sales grasp, sucks.

Sales CROs have a weak marketing/ops grasp, sucks.

Bean/Data/Ops CROs don't have the soft skills/context based decision making necessary, sucks.

CROs can't just be VPs of X with new paint, and if they are it just fucks the org.

It’s a board and VC created title that VPs are slotted into.

Besides, CROs hire for their weakness…or at least they should.

I hate bs fake titles. It’s like a bank where you can be a VP of coffee making.

All depends on size of org and scope of CRO role.

Never heard of a ‘Marketing CRO’, a company should just have one Chief Revenue Officer, and they handle all things money making.

I think his point is the CRO who has a marketing or sales background may not be strong in the other discipline

CRO should not have a marketing background, but should have some knowledge and experience in sales. Co is to drive and control revenue, which is mainly sales in the door and protection from the company wasting money on unnecessary expenses ( people, tooling and any money spent). But I get it and agree a marketing person typically blows at sales.

I’d say CRO from marketing is pretty big. Depends on the org but many companies with someone that can run a full PLG motion in tandem with outbound.

So far this has been some person that used to be a head of growth or whatever as a CRO and hiring a trial by fire VP of sales that usually falls on the sword in 18 months.

Honestly, CROs should only be responsible for areas they have experience with. The VP of CS can report to the CRO to make sure they have the lee-way to do what they want.
